Well Final Fantasy 15 looks awesome to me, then again i've never enjoyed turn based games. Maybe Ni No Kuni or Southpark will change that when i finally get around to playing them.

Ni No Kuni is a great game, but its battle system is flawed. Luckily, it has that Ghibli charm, which carries the whole game.

Southpark is awesome through and through if you enjoy the animated series a bare minimum. Truly a remarkable game.

I am currently playing FF IX on ePSXe with the Natural Vision plugin and it looks really good! But I have to say that the battle system is way too slow.
When it comes to turn-based battle systems, I think the series peaked with FF X-2. The game might not have been the best, but its battle system had all he right ideas, dosed perfectly, and it was fast paced and fun. If they could make an other game with a similar battle system but without the over-abondance of exposition, I'd welcome a return to turn-based.

For now, I'm intrigued by just how deep and fun they've made the battle system of XV.

That's the reason why i want to try out both, i find Ni No Kuni extremely charming and i'm a massive fan of Southpark.

Square keeps trying to "westernize" their games, but they don't know what that means. They think it means more action, but that isn't true (personally, I think they just need to have less annoying little kid characters to appeal to western audiences).

The one thing that I think most of us can agree on is that square should stop trying to westernize their games. Go back to what their fanbase wants, a good turn based rpg. I mean, look at bravely default. That games battle system was widely acclaimed as one of the better systems of a jrpg in the last decade or so. It was just a traditional turn based system with a twist. As much as I hated bravely default, the battle system was its one redeemable feature.

Stop trying to force action into your rpg's square!

Bravely Default isn't a good example. If they wanted to replicate those sales numbers, then they would have already made a bunch of similar games. They attempt to make a game with a global audience in mind when they made FF7, so that is their formula for growth. Every time they've gone closer to their roots, it's sold worse. Why the hell would they not continue to change?

FF7 is still very close to a traditional FF game.

FFXIII was closer to FF roots than XIII-2 and Lightning Returns and we know how the sales progression there went.  LR was the least traditional FF out of those.

FFIX was at the end of the PS1 generation but still sold over 5 million.  After that FFX sold about 8 million.

FF7 was unlike previous FFs in nearly every way. The story, characters, and setting are unlike any previous game in the series. They wanted to make a game for the world and succeeded. Square got its success by trying new things, so that's what they do.

For reference, the only FF that I would say goes back to the series roots post FF7 is FF9.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

I disagree. That would mean you couldn't see a big gap between Final Fantasies I-XII and XIII onward. But I most certainly do. Thus I'm forced to call your analysis into question.
Perhaps there's simply a limit to how far a FF game can deviate from what can vaguely be called the formula before this reinvention process of yours becomes a liability.
Who knows. But I'll bet that gap I referred to before is placed in a different spot in the series depending on who you ask. But if I'm asked, I'd say it's between XII and XIII that somebody at Squenix went off the deep end, but I can see traces of that madness creeping in around the edges of XII.

this one looks more like an action game, maybe that's what this franchise needs.

My take on FF is basically this. I think the classic RPG that we all grew to love is just passing out of favor as newer generations come up. There's no way a FFX could launch today and be what it was in 2001. The industry as just changed so much.

I think Square is trying to keep them alive by changing what a JRPG is and that's not good because if the younger generation doesn't care, and you change what the older generation loved about them... who's left to buy them?

Imo, you stay with the same formula and rely on loyal, old fans. When the genre dies out totally? You simply pack it up and move on.

you mean nostalgic feeling because they try to do the same thing like when it happened in the past, trying to invent the core, many true FF fans will agree with U

Meh, it looks fantastic so it's a definite buy for me.

JRPGs aren't about turn based, they are just RPGs made in Japan but they had a certain style to them. FFXV will no doubt still have that style.

People seem to think there is something wrong with the turn based gameplay. If this was truely the case, Pokemon would not have just sold over 7 million again. The turn based mechanic shouldn't be removed, it should be changed if they want to help it grow if you want to do that but at this point we don't know. We don't know if a new graphically modern game with gameplay like FF6-9 will work because they aren't making it. FF13 was not it, they removed so much just for 'pace'. Pace that was broken.

What they should be doing is stick to the tried and tested turn based formula for the main series, not because they need to update themselves but because of those loyal fans. When you have a guaranteed user base you stick to what they like to make sure sales come in, when you start messing with the formula, that's when you lose sales. FIFA, CoD, Tekken, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, these games are basically the same as they originally were just with a few changes based on modern graphical capabilities.

Hmm, pie.

They are not 'reinventing' the battle system, they are trying to make it fit in with popular demand. Something they did not do with 1 to 10 if you ask uninformed me.

The battle system of FF15 looks like cheap shit to be quite honest. It's not particularly inventive either considering it's like a stripped down action RPG. The fact that it is something different does not automatically make it good or classic FF.

I could take a shit, shove it in a puppy's mouth, and call it Final Fantasy. That doesn't make it good or classic.

I don't really care. I've never been interested in FF until XV, and the battle system is why.

Same. I reckon this game looks exciting.
