My take on FF is basically this. I think the classic RPG that we all grew to love is just passing out of favor as newer generations come up. There's no way a FFX could launch today and be what it was in 2001. The industry as just changed so much.
I think Square is trying to keep them alive by changing what a JRPG is and that's not good because if the younger generation doesn't care, and you change what the older generation loved about them... who's left to buy them?
Imo, you stay with the same formula and rely on loyal, old fans. When the genre dies out totally? You simply pack it up and move on.
