Forums - Gaming - Why don't you play fighting games?

I do play them occasionally, but most of the time there isn't just a lot of meat to most of them.
It's either a terribly short and uninteresting campaign, a few stages arcade mode or player vs. player.

Weapon Master mode in Soul Calibur 2 was amazing though as was the story mode of the Mortal Kombat reboot.
More of that please!

7th gen fighting games I've played:
Dead or Alive 4, 5
Street Fighter IV, X Tekken
Tekken 6, Tag Tournament 2
Soul Calibur IV, V
Mortal Kombat X
BlazBlue Calamity Trigger
Injustice
Marvel vs. Capcom 3
and a bunch of arcade remakes/ports

Sure, but what is the value of winning a random match online? What progress have I made? Why is it fun? The player might be harder, and that might be more rewarding, but a lot of the reward I get from playing online is the social atmosphere. If the people I play against are random, then that really is not fun to me. Why play online then, other than the added difficulty? Furthermore, random matches in video games tend to be poorly balanced. If I beat somebody it might be because I learned a new skill and was able to use it well or it might just be because they are just starting out in the game and don't know much. If I lose it could be because certain characters are unbalanced. This is a problem even RPG's like Pokemon have. So, again, I don't find it enjoyable without having the social atmosphere. There is no feeling of being rewarded for doing well in a fighting game, otherwise.

I can't tell you the value of something.  I mean, sure, it's fun for me, but I cannot describe it into words.  Fighting games are like playing a game of chess, in a way.  It's a mind game, through and through.  Sure, they have stories, but that isn't the focus.  It's not an action game where you have a set event you must carry out.  No two fights will be alike.  You are forced to adapt.

Basically the same reason I'm not really into Pokemon games. The entire community moves on to the next game after about a year. The metagame boils down to people trying to find the best way to exploit the mechanics to avoid having to learn to play the game legitimately.

Also I don't own a PS3. So yeah.

Lol... Well, I guess in that case, exploitation is the legit way to play.  But you're right, some fighters are just completely busted.  That back and fourth grab I did with venom, near the end of the match in my video is a perfect example of exploiting the game.  But, i kinda had to, or else I was going to lose.  And, I wasn't having any of that.  Do what it takes to win, at all costs.  0 f's given.

It wasn't brain-dead, though.  I played against that person a lot, so they knew that tagging out was the best way to get out of it.  But, I knew the tag was coming, so I countered the counter.

I suck at quarter circles

Hardly any of those in Tekken. *hint hint*

LOL Once the combos start you'll start to see that the non directional pads inputs will feel like quarter circles. I've done combos where I pressed half the diambond and went around in a full circle and then back around again. If he plays with the simple strong hits and combos he'll be fine though. I see where you're going.

Yeah, that's one reason I stay away from using Alex in Street Fighter III.  But, then again, I stay away from all grapplers.

The FGC is the absolute worst. I love DOA, and Smash, but the community is packed with ignorant arseholes who've got no idea how to interact with people.

Kind of stupid to say that a community is a turn-off, but it is to me.

While not the main reason I don't play fighting game (I enjoy them but I can't get into them for more than 20 minutes before getting bored) this is a really strong point.

I went to a fan hosted Smash tourney once. Never again.

Unfortunately, this seems to happen in every fandom.

I do from time to time but either I don't have many people to play with or I just don't have the time to invest into learning the games and all the combos and moves

You're right there my man, everything's got it's fair share of unbearable stooges. It's just some take it too far.

I play Smash at least but the main reason I tend not to get into fighting games is the effort it requires to not only be good but also stay good. Take a couple weeks break and come back and see if you don't suck at the same game you were once good at.
