Games age over time however when Rare were making there games they were all in another league of there own. Not only did Rare compete in all types of Genres, but they would succeed in dominating there competition.

Rare made Games that not only competed with the best but beat the best

*Diddy Kongs Racing is one of the best Kart racers in its day, its as good as MK64 and maybe even better.
*Golden Eye/Perfect Dark were some of the greatest FPS games on all platforms even beating the PC market.
*Killer Instinct was a dominate console fighter and one of the best, out shining SF and MK
*Banjo Karzooie is to this day one of the greatest platformers ever made, gamers still prefer Banjo over Mario 64 and M64 is one of the greatest games ever made.
*Donkey Kong Country is claimed one of the greatest 2D platformers ever made, beating Super Mario World and not many games can go side by side with SMW.
etc

There are many great companies today that can only stick to certain genres. Rare competed in many genres and were the best at it.

Example - Naughty Dog tried to compete with Mario Kart and 2D and 3D Mario games in there respectful genres and had there ass's handed to them. Rare on the other hand not only matched but beat Nintendo's own games.

They were clearly one of the greatest companies around when they were on. There talent pool was the best, however these days due to many retirements and staff changes Rare is just a name. Just because they don't make GOTYs anymore doesn't mean there games aren't good or even great.

Old School gamers will respect Rare, they weren't afraid to change things up and try out different genres, and when they did they were A+++.

Rare will remain in many gamers hearts for offering great experiences for those who grew up with them. Your clearly not one of them.

No-one rates rare anymore.

So you're judging their games to today's standards?

Tells you to go play Gears of war instead of Het Force Jemini lol.

They were at their best in the early days of the n64. There games were patchy later. Dkc 1 - 3 were well implemented platform games but nothing new or innovative. I'm not a banjo fan but it was a good eaily 3d platformed that borrowed ideas from m64 but had its own identity.

GoldenEye was their peak. It's dated but no other game has truely succeeded in following what they did. Perfect dark was ok as was conkers and other later n64 games but you could see they were on the decline after GoldenEye.

Nintendo got a good price for them.

Super Mario Bros. is overrated. I mean look at the graphics compared to Uncharted 4...

I always see people praising Rare for their work in the 90s with Nintendo, but honestly, I don't think they are really THAT good

DKC 1 and 2 were pretty good, 3 is no doubt the worst in trilogy
I do own all the games but never really liked them. I just think 2d platformers are boring unless they give you powerups(be mario)

I didn't like Banjo Kazooie, I'm not a fan of running around just to find stuff, I would take SM64 over Banjo any day. Banjo Tooie is pretty much the same.
That does not make the game bad it just is not your taste. As long as its not a collectathon like DK64 I dont mind

Jet Force Gemini was ehhh, just go play Gears of War for a better TPS
I never liked the look of the game and was disappointed with its 2 player mode  but come on really? GOW? 2 generatios later....

Never played DK64 or Conker, might pick up DK soon but Conker is just to expensive
Conker is the better game (and you already said you didnt like collecting stuff thats what you do in Dk64)

GoldenEye is not very good either, not only is it not a very good FPS, but I don't think it is a very good game in general.
Still best console shooter together with perfect dark because it actually gave you something to do. Missions had several challenges depending on your difficulty the missions changed.

Also never played Diddy Kong racing, but I think I will just stick to Mk64 thank you very much
DKR is next to Mario Kart still one of the best racing games ever.

Last but not least

Star Fox Adventures SUCKED, I want a on rails shooter, not a bad Zelda clone
It did not suck at all the ending had its "wtf moment" since they rushed out the game because microsoft.

But what says you?
I say you dont know what you are talking about because you look at those games from todays perspective and expect them to be mediocre streamlined experiences like todays games are. And you didnt even play half of their games at all so you automatically disqualify yourself from having a valuable opinion

People are basing it mostly on their past, much the same way Bioware were fantastic before. In my opinion; they're both fantastic developers who have come under someone's thumb and slipped, the talent might still be there but they're not really allowed to let it shine.

As it stands today; Rare is not the legendary developer they once were (same as Bioware, which are among my all time favorites) but based on their entire catalog, I'd hardly call them overrated. If Goldeneye 64 was their only game; I'd still sing their praises.

Ha. I've been recently playing Banjo Kazooie, and I gotta say it's the most complete platformer of the generation. I never got into Mario 64 as a kid. DK 64 was also my most played game on the 64 and I absolutely loved it though I understand why many don't, but as a kid I gave it all my dedication and time (took me two years to get to the final stage and I couldn't get the stupid Rare Coin!!!).

Anyways yeah they weren't overrated. At the time they were fantastic games and talented people. Now though, of course gaming has evolved massively so it's not the same.

Whilst I agree they're overrated, DKC and Goldeneye* were huge system sellers so their importance cannot be denied.

Personally I think their best work was in the 8Bit days.

* edit: they were both amazing games as well to be fair

Back in the day they were all good to great games.

Obliviously they havnt aged well, I remember trying some Perfect Dark multiplayer a few years ago.... was terrible. Controls were clunky, auto aim actually made things worse, weapon cycling was archaic and so on.

Not every game ages well.
