Um, you're factually wrong. Their catalog from NES through N64 was legendary.

No, DKC2, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Banjo 1 are among the best games ever created.

Saying that, I love all 3 Metroid Prime games |
Well ofc its smaller, one was on the N64 one was on the GC. Metroid Prime is not a maze, they give you a map and its easy to follow.

| ExplodingBlock said: I always see people praising Rare for their work in the 90s with Nintendo, but honestly, I don't think they are really THAT good DKC 1 and 2 were pretty good, 3 is no doubt the worst in trilogy I didn't like Banjo Kazooie, I'm not a fan of running around just to find stuff, I would take SM64 over Banjo any day. Banjo Tooie is pretty much the same Jet Force Gemini was ehhh, just go play Gears of War for a better TPS Never played DK64 or Conker, might pick up DK soon but Conker is just to expensive GoldenEye is not very good either, not only is it not a very good FPS, but I don't think it is a very good game in general. Also never played Diddy Kong racing, but I think I will just stick to Mk64 thank you very much Last but not least Star Fox Adventures SUCKED, I want a on rails shooter, not a bad Zelda clone But what says you? |
You're trying to view games from 20 years ago through a modern perspective. Back when Rare was making those great games, they were some of, if not the BEST in the industry. That's why they were held in such high regard. Modern Rare, I will agree, are overrated. Most of the original talent has left the building and they've pretty much become Xbox Avatar developers lol
It is, but it was still on of the best game developers in the 5th gen.
If you are playing these games now for the first time then that goes somewhat to explaining your position. You also did skip some of Rare's best.
That said Rare was simply the best developer of the era. The consistency and quality of their output was just staggering.

It depends on the standards you're holding it to.
At the time, Goldeneye was the greatest game ever for some co-op couch fun with friends.
It's aged poorly though, with the original controls, and the FPS genre as whole has seen some a lot of evolution since.

I hate when people claim that Nostalgia blinds you to how good a game actualy was. If 15 years later people still fondly remember and enjoy those games, then they were good games!!! I certainly don't remember the bad games I played back then.

In my opinion, Rare's N64 era was impressive technically but those games weren't great.
How many of their games have actually held up well? Not many.

For the first mass played multiplayer FPS on consoles you could excuse it for being "not very good". BTW I suggest to check the history of Ultimate Play the Game to have a good grasp of the entire Rare's background, or rather Stamper brothers' background. The company might not produce a golden hit at every release, but it's long-running enterprise that under different names has made quite a few ground-breaking games before Nintendo and when it was owned by Nintendo.
