So... it's only overrated if we ask you?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Whilst I agree they're overrated, DKC and Goldeneye* were huge system sellers so their importance cannot be denied.

Personally I think their best work was in the 8Bit days.

* edit: they were both amazing games as well to be fair

Besides Battletoads, what else did they do? Just wondering

The minute you insulted Banjo Kazooie you invalidated your existence. Charm, wit, one of the most amazing scores in gaming, instantly lovable artstyle, unique puzzle/platforming gameplay combo (far more complex then M64).

They out Nintendo'd Nintendo during the N64 era. Their titles account for 50% of the systems classics. Of course today they don't all age well but the only N64 game I've played recently that aged very well are the Zelda's.

Um, you're factually wrong. Their catalog from NES through N64 was legendary.

Not necessarily. Rare made a lot of the LJN games the Angry Video Game Nerd hates.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

Rare was a very rare commodity back in the day. Games don't become less good over time. The problem is that going back and playing many of the older games is frustrating. You have grown used to many of the advancements in all of these genres and when you dont have them while playing the older games, you think that there is something wrong.

Back in the day, people couldn't imagine a better game than Pacman(not on consoles, in the arcade). If you were good at that, you were special. Only a year or so later, Donkey Kong came out. That was like the most incredible leap in skill. You had to not just go left and right, you had to JUMP! Point being, every year there are incremental advancements that improve or change the skills required to play video games.

It is near the end of the end....

Even by today's standards, Rare's creativity far outshines that of the competition.

Ask anyone in 10 years from now if they are more impressed by Advanced Warfare or Banjo-Kazooie and the answer will be quite obvious. One is a game with great music, gameplay, art- and level design and humor. The other is a shooter with unrealistic visuals, poor frame-rate, poor resolution and poor physics.

Conker, Banjo 1 & 2 and GoldenEye are four of my very top games from the N64 so I will have to disagree.

To me, Rare was half of what made the N64 so great. Nintendo had OoT, SM64, MM and MK64 that I really enjoyed, and Rare had the previously mentioned games. Those 8 in total basically makes my whole top 10 list.

If Nintendo didn't have Zelda, I would have called the system Rare64 instead, that's how much I loved their games. :)

The only thing the same about the current RARE to the old RARE is the name of the company.
