I prefer Goldeneye and Perfect Dark over any modern shooter, but you need to use the 1.2 Turok style control option. Multiplayer was just perfect.

Viva Pinata is pretty incredible. Completely unique game that I think would capture even more interest today.
Rare was magnificent in the 90's, but is undeniably a has-been nowadays.
Nintendo should try to buy back the rights to some of their old IPs, and task a worthy studio with resurrecting them. If they ever did, it wouldn't happen soon.
I say go back to the 90s and play their games, back in the day those games were the pinnacle in gaming. Of course nowadays they feel old or not so good.
Let me just specify some things up
I'm not comparing Gears to JFG, I am simply saying if you want a good TPS TODAY then Gears is a better option
Also I never played Perfect Dark, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, or Conker. The games mentioned in the OP are the ones I own.
I also want to put out there that alot of N64 games aged a lot better than the Rare ones. SM64 and OoT both aged pretty poorly, but I found them much more enjoyable than Banjo and Goldeneye. Rayman 2, Kirby 64, Doom, and others have aged much better than alot of N64 Rare games
Another big thing I wanna put out
I am talking about Rare from someones perspective currently, not from someone in the 90's perspective. People act like the games are just as good as they remember them 15 years ago, but the truth is, they aren't

You are judging games in a weird way... you just said "I'm not comparing Gears to JFG, I am simply saying if you want a good TPS TODAY then Gears is a better option" So you a judging nintendo 64 games and super nes by todays standards. To judge how great Rare was back then you should compare their games to other games on the market at the same time...
So you come accross as saying why would you play banjo kazooie and say it's great, when Uncharted 2 was much better? technically yeah by today's standards Uncharted 2 is "better" Except in 1998 when banjo Kazooie came out it was one of the best games of the time. But i shouldnt have enjoyed it or said it was a good game because in the years later "better games" were gonna come out?
So by your standards, when Uncharted 4 comes out if it's way better than uncharted 2, uncharted two is no longer good and why would anyone play crappy uncharted 2 when then can play uncharted 4 instead?
Rare was decent in the 90s. To me they're pretty much non-existent at this point though. Definitely living off of their legacy.

I did, the post above your does that
People need to get the fact across their head that I am not looking at Rare if I was in the 90s, Few of Rare's games actually aged well. I am not comparing Rare games to new games, I compared them to old games like Super Mario World, Doom, A Link to The Past, Ocarina of Time, and others. I think that those games are better in the fact that they have aged well, unlike most Rare games

So Rare is overrated because you listed 5 games from Rares great years (1990-2001 ish) that YOU find better? Weird way of judging things. And based on average opinion you're opinion isn't what the majority thinks. On metacritic there are 7 Rare games from that era rated 88 or higher. And again it's an opinion because the only N64 games i can still play and enjoy are Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Super Mario 64, Zelda OOT, Mario Kart 64, and the first 3 Mario Parties. Rare made 4 of those games. They aren't overrated if the majority thinks they are great and you are in the minority who think they are overrated.
So yes if i ask you, Rare is overrated. If i ask most other people who played Rare's games they would say that Rare deserves the praise.

Everyone has different opinions, just because the majority thinks Rare is amazing doesn't mean that it is fact. I don't dislike them as a developer, just find that they are overrated. A lot of people say Ocarina of Time is the best game ever. Does that make it true just because everyone else said so? No, because everyone has their own opinions
Also if you want a bigger list of games from 1990 to 2003 that are better than the Rare games from that era, here is one, once again, all my opinion
Wind Waker
Mario Kart Double Dash
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 2
Sonic Genesis Trilogy
Majora's Mask
Duke Nukem 3D
Super Mario World
A Link to The Past
Sonic Adventure
Shenmue
Rayman Trilogy
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Earthworm Jim
Super Smash Bros Melee
Star Fox 64
Ocarina of Time
Yoshi's Island
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Metroid
Metroid Prime
Pikmin
Doom
Paper Mario
Is that enough games for you? All of these have aged MUCH better than games like GoldenEye or Banjo Kazooie and others. Rare games might have been good THEN. But most of them aren't very good NOW. Unlike all of the games I lised above
