Perfect Dark is one of my favorite FPSs of all time. It's certainly the best console FPS of the era. Other than that, Rare was reasonable. Not great, not terrible; reasonable.

Then Microsoft bought them up and they've been mediocre ever since.

Do you know what consensus means? Since judging if something is great or not, especially when it comes to games which is very opinion based. The "greatest games of all time" or developers have to be judged based on what the averages say so if you ask 1,000,000 people what their favorite game is and 900,000 say Zelda OOT for example, then based on the consensus that is the greatest game of all time it's irrelevant what the other's think in that case, because consensus says it's that. So if you ask if rare is overrated and most people say no they aren't overrated then they aren't overrated because most people say they aren't. It's pretty straight forward, it doesn't mean you have to like what the average says, but the law of averages say that you are wrong, you're an outlier.

TL;DR You don't have to agree with the consensus or like Rares games as much as others, everyone has their own tastes, likes, and dislikes, but the consensus is that they are (were) great, therefore not overrated.

If you played those games recently then it's not fair since those games haven't age very well but in their time, they were one of the best games available. I really enjoyed DKC 1 and 2 and golden eye was the first FPS for a lot of players that included local multiplayer. (never knew about halo until halo 3).

Yes, Rare games are very much overrated. The entire Nintendo 64 library is overrated come to think of it. This is the generation of games that have aged the least well in my view - with Ocarina of Time being a big exception to that.

Let's get back to the topic, which is Rare. I've said all this before and I'll say it again. Banjo Kazooie - good game, but overrated. Suffers with all the camera and control issues that plague 3D platformers of that generation and I'd rather play Rayman 2 for sure. Goldeneye, classic and genre-defining. It has been bettered time and time again since. DKC games are great, but inferior to the Nintendo developed platformers on this platform - namely Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.

Rare (in their recognised good days) were very much of that time period. Of course people who have nostalgic memories with those games see them in very good light, and they were groundbreaking games for their time. Nonetheless, from the perspective of someone who didn't own a Nintendo 64 until 5 years ago, the games are not that great.

You're ignoring the fact that they are the best dev ever. Viva pinata eclipses anything ninty has done in the past 100 years.

Idk who LJN Games or the "Angry Video Game Nerd" are.

And a company can put out some stinkers and still be incredible. Not everything is a hit. They've made over 100 games, not counting ports.

GoldenEye being one of the best games ever made is not an opinion.
There are not many games like GE of which the consensus worldwide is so great on it being a masterpiece.
There are also people who, believe it or not, dont like sex. Or people who cant see why some of Van Goghs masterpieces are masterpieces.
