lol, that or the regular 3DS sold like shit after the XL came out and the market research suggested that the New 3DS 'slim' wouldn't sell.
This is a bit of a strange decision. Similar to how NoJ never released the 2DS there. Seems like Europe will be the region where you can have the definitive 3DS collection

This is a strange decision, especially since the changeable design-plates are only for the New 3DS, not for the XL. I guess NoA doesn't want the money from the people that like to customize the look of their device.

calling it the 3ds2 Is a bad idea. Consumers are idiots and don't know how to read from left to right. Working in electronics retail I have parents come in on a weekly basis and ask for a Ds3 game. I can only imagine they will get confused by what new means as well.. but adding another number will not make things less confusing.
I'm actually not saddened by this news, but it is pretty crappy for people who were looking forward to it.
