Has nothing to do with the battle system. Xenoblade isnt turn based either. It has to do with the lack of a proper supporting cast and narritive.

Supportng cast and narritive through conversational pieces was an element made famous by Bioware in story driven RPG's. Demon Souls and Dark Souls has a story no matter how shallow it is. That game is purely about Action/RPG gameplay mechanics. There was once a time when Western RPG players used to question whether JRPG's were true JRPG's since you couldn't affect the outcome of the story through their actions, but we've all come to the conclusion that its two culture different perspectives on the RPG even though they all came from a common source.


You're going on a tangent. This is quite simple: No narritive and supporting cast, not an RPG for me. Cant have a role without a play. So, no the director of Dark souls does not make the best RPG's in my opinion because they can hardly be qualified as such.


I basically laid it out for you in the exact way you just said it. Its not an RPG in your opinion. I was telling you what people thought of JRPG's in their opinion and then you told me I was diverting and gave me your opinion of it (which was what I was leading into...no one wins). The conclusion is there are many different types of RPG's. There are WRPG's, JRPG's and the most common type of RPG springing out of the west is Action RPG's. Even Final Fantasy is using the Action RPG formula with some typical final fantasy flavor.  All Demon Souls is missing is a proper story and conversation tree. Thats just the thing though...the game doesn't need to because its succeeded without it. Its purely about the decision making process on what you do with your character.

By definition the type of RPG that Demon Souls and Dark Souls are...are known as Dungeon Crawlers. Its a western style RPG created by a Japanese company, thats all. Pure Japanese difficulty, with the western philosophy and trope in a dungeon crawl to level up and survive. Diablo does that too and no one denies its an action RPG.

Huh. If the souls series aren't rpg's than neither is Bethesda's series. They are action rpg's though.


Action RPG's are RPG's. It does not clear them from the need to have a plot to be qualified as such.



So the goal of saving the world is not a plot? There's plenty of plot but it's just not a story heavy series. People consider FFXIII a rpg. it lacks everything.

Sony have developpers who are among the best in the world, but they're not all the best in their genre.

I really only agree with number 2.. In my honest opinion Smash WiiU is far better than every Street Fighter ever created, yes, even SFII!

I agree with 2, but Sony has no ownership over 1 and 3 (and those two are highly debatable anyway) and 4 is one I completely disagree with. Currently the best hack and slash dev is Platinum Games.
