I liked the Wii Remote, but I prefer the Gamecube controller over the Wii Remote.

@the_dengle: Absolute ridiculous post. Your "simulation" is way off. As I have a Wii remote to hand I tested your "simulation" vs the actual reality of pressing the 2 button. Pressing the 2 button was very straightforward in comparison.
I'm not going to tell you that the 1 and 2 buttons are positioned ideally for the vertical position because clearly they're not. The reason they are where they are is to make the horizontal position possible, and without this the Wii remote would be a far lesser controller. For games played in the vertical position, the 1 and 2 buttons are best deployed e.g. to bring up the map, or just not at all.

Skyward Sword really drives home how terrible it is when you want to view the Help menu. Reaching for the center buttons on a dual analogue controller is natural, you're reaching across the controller. It's not even that far from the face buttons. Besides that, usually the center buttons are the start/select buttons -- the sort of things you probably don't mind loosening your grip on the controllers to press. Odds are if you're hitting the start button you might even be about to put the controller down. This is the natural and recommended way to hold a Wii Remote:
And this is an artist's rendition of trying to press the '2' button from that position:
To simulate this position without holding a Wii Remote, here is a practice exercise for anyone who wants to test my claim. Touch your thumb to the tip of your middle finger; this is what pressing the center button of a dual analogue controller feels like. Now try touching your thumb to the circled part of your hand. This is what trying to press the 2 button on a Wii Remote feels like.
Basically you have mutant hands if this is comfortable for you, I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you. |
That person has a very small hand. Mine reaches easily; since my hand is curled around the Wiimote, its more like clenching your fist then touching your thumb to your pinkie.
Gamepad or Gamecube controller are the best. Gamepad could be better with longer battery life and I am not a fan of the C-Stick, but besides those 2 flaws both of those controllers are amazing

I guess I have ant hands
the shopped picture was meant to be silly by the way. the third one was not though, that is what reaching for the 2 feels like.

Maybe I just have big hands. Anyway, the only issue I have with the Wiimote Plus and Nunchuk is that the connection between the two isn't the most durable, and that my original nunchuks from 2009 tend to disconnect when I move the Wiimote too aggressively. Other than that, it's the perfect conroller in my book.
Not the gamecube ;), seriously the gc controller was great, but the Wii U pro controller is a better one, it can be used in more games and be comfortable, the c-stick is not a proper stick for FPS or TPS. I just think that the Wii U Pro is the best controller since the GC.

Oh, don't even tell me about that stupid help menu. It just kept showing up and distracting me in the middle of all the most intense battles as I got nervous and started holding the controller tightly, accidentally pressing that stupid 2 button. So yeah, I guess opposite problem here. But obviously I wasn't pressing it with a thumb, but rather the palm of my hand. |
I didn't even think of trying that. Maybe next time... not that I need the help button anymore. Early in the game I used it occasionally to remind myself of some of the controls, damned if I can remember which ones. Maybe rolling?

So many GameCube kids here, I think it skews all these polls because they look back at that console with rose tinted glasses.
The GCN controller was comfortable and that's about it. The d-pad was *terrible*, the Z-button with no opposite button was lame too. And the button layout was never used again by anyone (even Nintendo) and for good reason ... it was pointless and made playing things like fighing games fairly awkward. The C-stick being smaller was also pointless.
The Wii Classic Controller Pro is the best one, you can play virtually every Nintendo game on it without too much of a problem.
The Pro Wii U controller is good too, but the d-pad being so close to the buttons is kind of weird.
I'll go as far as to say I think the GameCube controller is maybe the worst one they've ever made.
It's the only one with a basically unusable d-pad.
