I'd prefer games such as Mario/Zelda that don't come out every flippin' year.

New Super Mario Bros. - 2006

Super Mario Galaxy - 2007

New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 2009

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 2010

Super Mario 3D land - 2011

New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 2012

New Super Mario Bros. U - 2012

Super Mario 3D World - 2013

I think it's safe to say Nintendo does the same with Mario.

You're lumping handheld games in with console games and 2d/3d games. It's not like all of them are the same thing. CoD has pretty much been stagnant since Modern Warfare. Advanced Warfare seems like it's changing things, but that's a 7 year difference. SMG/SMG2 are different from 3D World, and NSMB, NSMB2 and NSMBU are all different from each other.

Not many people will argue which IP has been more innovative or interesting. We all know Mario>COD in that department. I was just refering to the statement that Mario isn't released once a year. Not only is it released once a year, it was released TWICE in the SAME year lol.

What about Battlefield, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Shadow of Mordor, The Crew, Dragon Age, and Destiny?

Honestly, I have no interest in any of those games. Obviously it would be better from Nintendo's point of view to have more support, but frankly there are very few games Wii U is missing out on that I would actually want. Heck, I didn't even buy Assassin's Creed when it was on Wii U.

And as someone who actually likes Call of Duty, (And considered Black Ops II one of the best games of 2012) yeah, I'd take Mario and Zelda over it.

If 3rd parties didn't release an iteration of their flagship titles EVERY SINGLE year I wouldn't feel Reggie had much of a point. But he does. I mean why even buy CoD:AW when you know the sequel will be out next year to hopefully improve on the last? Then of course its the same vicious cycle of why buy the next in line when... you get the idea

Because AW will be a different experience than Black Ops 3 or whatever comes out next year just like Ghosts is a different game from AW.

Because why buy the same games every year on PlayStation/Xbox/PC when you can buy the same games every FIVE years on Nintendo consoles?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

im honestly a bit surprised at the reactions people are having to this.

i, for one, am happy that nintendo is a differentiated platform. and i think a lot of other people are too. if the only options we had were x1 and ps4, that would certainly leave me out in the cold. i dont give a fuck about any games on those platforms. so i agree with him. nintendo is serving customers like me, and i am very thankful for that. sure, x1 and ps4 may sell more consoles, but its doubtful that they will rake in more cash off this industry in the long run. nintendo has proven that they are more efficient at making money off this industry, and i think that is why reggie and the company as a whole is fine with selling less while still making a profit.

reggie hasnt said anything wrong, here. really, guys. and just because he is a PR guy doesnt mean his points arent valid. he holds a point of view about this industry that is perfectly ok to have. he isnt "wrong" to see things in this way.

I would prefer Zelda, but not Mario, over CoD. But I prefer Uncharted, Tlou, God of War, Sinister, Buzz (I hope we get another Buzz) and more besides over Zelda. And having CoD present on PS doesn't at all diminish the unique content PS has on offer. What it does do is greatly increase the user base, which as Reggie says, allows more games to sell well.

Good on Nintendo for swimming in its own pool. it's up to them to make others see that thier pool is the best to swim in, but they are not doing a very good job of it.

Whether Nintendo can forget about the console wars and develop a business model where selling about 20 million consoles per generation is decently profitable is an interesting question. A small but stable and profitable niche is actually a pretty good place to be. Especially if you can all but ignore the competition. The less you have to actively compete the better. A product that sells itself is best of all.

You get CoD every year. Mario 3D platformers come every 3 years perhaps. Even longer for Zelda games. Unless you also mean all the spin-offs, then we get Mario titles every year, but they're totally different games, so it doesn't matter.

I don't know what that has to do with what I wrote. I don't care a bit for CoD, never bought it, never played it. But I certainly see significant advantage for it being on PS.

OTOH, for Nintendo CoD has never been much help in terms of market share. Even when it had the best version of a CoD game (Black Ops II I think it was) it didn't do much for them. And that is certainly because of the annual release timeframe for the franchise. All the CoD gamers knew that the next CoD game would be on PS4/Durango (the name hadn't been announced yet), and no doubt the next CoD game would be visually better on the next gen PS/Xb platforms. And it seems no one is particularly fussed at tablet controls. So almost no one is ever going to buy a Nintendo platform for CoD. But the benefit of CoD being on Nintendo is that a Nintendo fan who also likes playing CoD would not feel drawn to get another platform for playing CoD, which means Nintendo securing all, or almost all of that person's game purchases. If someone buys another platform for CoD because it's not on Nintnedo, then they will likely buy other games for that platform, which then dimininishes the software spend on Nintendo.

He mentions one franchise but fails to mention the hundreds of games he won't get to play

I think Reggie can afford all the consoles.

Sure but that destroys his point

I think it's safe to say Nintendo does the same with Mario.

well.. damn, i mean you would have a point here but.. of all these games you listed, there are three different styles of games represented here. thats my only issue with this post. the original poster has a problem with games like cod and ass creed that come out every year. and as you have demonstrated, a full fledged mario game comes out yearly (or has up to this point) as well, but its not really the same..

you see, cod and assassins creed have the same gameplay in every game. the games havent really evolved much since 2007. these mario games you have listed, however, are vastly different from eachother.

we have four nsmb games (which is too much for my tastes, personally. ill never understand releasing fucking two of them in the same year), 2 galaxy games which are the successors to sunshine and 64, so you can go ahead and include those games in there too (1996, 2003). and then you have the 3D land/world games which are pretty much the same game. and in a lot of ways a hybrid between the 2D and 3D series, which is a huge treat to mario fans of both styles.

so even though mario games have come out every year, as you have shown, there is objectively a lot more variety in them compared to your CoD game that comes out every year.

Well, i can't really disagree...
