Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Safe To Say 3rd Party Support From Wii U Is Pretty Much Gone?

Wii was successful because it was a very fresh experience.

GameCube was unsuccessful because it was a tired experience, and was less like a Nintendo console and more like a Sony console marketed at children.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Doesn't really matter why the Wii was successful.

Smartphones/tablets have taken over the market for arcadey/cheap/old-school style gaming. And in the process devalued such a game, no one will pay even $20 for that now that they can get it for $1 and have it in their pocket when ever the itch to play for a few minutes strikes (something else Nintendo can't compete with, most adults simply will never carry a game device with them at all times).

It was revealed recently that females have overtaken the male teenager as the no.1 audience for games, but most of that growth has come from women gaming on smartphones. I see it all the time because I travel a lot ... women playing Candy Crush or something like that on their phones.

Unless Nintendo is willing to sell Animal Crossing for $1 on the iOS/Android marketplace, they are never getting that audience back.

Nothing forces them to make games for Nintendo in the first place.

If they wanted it to fail they had the opportunity to just release no games from the start.  Nothing would flop faster than Nintendo launching Wii U with no 3rd party.

Nothing forces them to support the PS4/Xbone like they do either. They could have given all platforms equal support and then seen what happened. Does it look like the Wii U get equal support to you? They gave it some bones so they wouldn't miss a large market if it suceeded.

They were afraid that the Wii U would carry Wii momentum and be successful.

Wii got close to jack shit for support because the industry bet (and hoped) that it would flop. People tend to forget just how much the industry had to get dragged kicking and screaming into supporting the Wii.

The shit people make up just to justify that the Wii U isn't getting any third party support is ridiculous sometimes.

Third parties aren't afraid of the Wii U becoming a success, what would they be afraid of? "Oh shit now we have one more system we might be able to viably sell our games on, what now?" lol

And the Wii wasn't supported because it was underpowered and unconventional in its control scheme, most developers couldn't be arsed to make a version of their games on way weaker hardware that also had to support motion controls, just for it to sell only a couple 100k if at all, cause even back then Wii owners hardly bought the same games that 360/PS3 owners bought.

First & Second party is what really matters anyway.

Of course it's gone.

The industry will jump at any opportunity to not support Nintendo consoles. They were looking eagerly for any sign of weakness from Nintendo to drop support, and they got it in spades with the Wii U.

Nintendo won't get equal support because they don't make equal consoles.

Being something in between generations in terms of power, Wii & Wii U really need games that are optimized just for them.  Devs can't just port their PS4/XB1 games straight to Wii U, and at the same time nobody is going to rush to buy PS3/360 ports on Wii U either.  To be appealing, devs need to take a risk to make something unique to the Wii/Wii U.

Wii built a market, and incentivized devs to make some unique content for it, different from PS3/360.  Wii U market is way too small; not even Nintendo can make good money on Wii U.

The industry believes that the most profitable path for them is one that excludes Nintendo consoles. They don't want Nintendo making consoles, otherwise there wouldn't be all the "Nintendo would be better off as a third party" propaganda being constantly shoved out by the gaming industry media. If they wanted strong Nintendo consoles, why the propaganda?

You're dead wrong about the Wii. Almost to the point of a gish gallop fallacy. All developers had to do was to use their Gamecube development kits, and they could have churned out software INCREDIBLY cheaply. That is even what Iwata recommended third parties to to. Instead companies WENT BANKRUPT left and right throwing all their resources at expensive HD development.

Resident Evil 4 sold TONS on the Wii. Call of Duty 3 outsold the PS3 version. Suda 51 threw a party because of No More Heroes sales. Then the unfair industry treatment of the Wii started to shape gamer biases and the audience changed.

Lol yeah, senseless conspiracy bullshit whoop whoop. Tell me what would the industry gain from Nintendo stopping to make consoles? Think about that for one freaking second, you do realize that even if 3rd parties were afraid of Nintendo they would gain nothing from them becoming 3rd party developers themselves? Cause surprise surprise, then 3rd parties would have to compete with Nintendo on every platform and couldn't just avoid the one where Nintendo is exclusively publishing its games on.

And wow all developers had to do was use their development kits from 6th gen, great. And the Gamecube wasn't a way weaker platform than the PS3/360 or PCs at that time? What point are you even trying to make here, that third parties should have ignored the PS3/360 instead of the Wii? How moronic would that have been?

Finally you can give me 3 games of which 2 sold over 2 million and one sold 500k on a 100 million installbase overall, well fuck me that's awesome.  Let's just ignore that every release after CoD 3 sold worse and worse on the system, while the exact opposite happened on the PS3/360, or that Resident Evil 4 was at one point a Gamecube exclusive, which has probably had an effect on the Wii sales, or that for most games 500k is really not that much.

Let's just act as if the industry is afraid of Nintendo and thus doesn't support it, no matter how little sense that actually makes.

I think you have to start seeing these independent developers as the new

third parties.  They can grow to become important third party developers for Nintendo

hardware in the future.

The industry knows that going away from hardware would hurt Nintendo's software as well, just like with Sega. If the industry doesn't want that, then again why have they done so much propaganda?

I've already had this discussion so many times on this forum and I'm getting tired of it. You're not contributing anything new and interesting to it. Sadly everything is getting flooded by revisionists like you. Of course there are more examples of third party games doing well on Wii, like House of the Dead and De Blob and Boom Blox and more. You're just gonna keep demanding more. Fuck off, I gave you examples that contradicted your viewpoint, I've done enough.

Yea, how moronic would that be? Not going bankrupt berzerking into next-gen and instead making games more cheaply for a platform that at the time outsold the HD twins combined? Where is my business sense...

um no, you have no basis of proof for your entire first paragraph. The people saying Ninty should go 3rd party are GAMERS. NOT people in the gaming media. Link me an article to a reputable source that ever said anything of the sort. Blogs by fanboys dont count.

Thats exactly what they did, which is why we saw so many ports intially, problem with that is that you can only do that in the beginning and people will and did get bored, sales drop. And they did make games cheaply, where do you think those shelves of shovelware came from? If anything they took Iwata's advice TOO far. what company went bankrupt? THQ? they were making dumb decisions, starting with uDraw which was on Wii.

Tons a strong word, but lets ignore that fact that it was a cheap port, cheap in that when it released it was already bargain basement price of course it sold well, no one is patting minecraft on the back, cause its a cheap as hell game. COD3 sold better than the PS3 version? so what? it was supposed to, didnt do better than 360 no even close, so not sure what your point is, and yes lets ignore EVERY cod game after that. NMH is some niche gmae, they dont seem to need to sell alot for that to make profit, lets get real. YOu think someone like say...Rockstar would be happy with that?
