Forums - Nintendo - What do you want from Nintendo's next handheld?

The kindle fire has no issues with downloads. I don't think incorporating it into retail games is an issue at all. It's more than just online gaming. It's everything. A monthly price is not an option for a Nintendo handheld. If the kindles books can stay affordable, so can these taxed games. The whole point is that no one is feeling the impact of the 3G/4G service. How do you think Nintendo can let you play online games for free as it is?

Did you seriously compare the Kindle Fire to the 3DS for downloads?

The Kindle Fire uses 4G LTE for one, not 3G, and the primary things people download on it are small apps and books, not entire games like you would on the 4DS/whatever. Not to mention that the 4G LTE model costs $100 more than the standard model, with a $50 per year charge for only 250MB a month. Not only that, but individual downloads are restricted to less than 50MB, which is much less than a lot of 3DS games. You'll eat through 250MB in less than a week if you game/download seriously on the 4DS/whatever.

And your comment about incorporating this huge cost into games is laughable, when the VAST majority of people are completely fine with just using wi-fi. The paltry amount of data you will get per month will be usable for almost nothing, and in exchange everyone gets to pay more money for games! Yay!

Like I said, I have no problem with a 4G/3G option, just pay your own monthly price and leave the other users alone. Most people don't play handheld games online anyway, the majority are for quick singleplayer fun in bursts. No one benefits from having more expensive games in exchange for a service that will see very little use.

I really don't like any of Nintendo's handhelds as far as hardware goes due to poor ergonomics and controls (among other things). I don't want gimmicks and I don't want unnecessary features like 3G or a HD screen jacking up the price. I want a simple, comfortable, affordable handheld that resembles a DualShock controller as closely as possible. Also, no more wimpy hinges ruining your otherwise reliable hardware.

3G and HD aren't unnecessary features. They are extremely nessecary. They are industry standards. A handheld without them in 2016 will be extremely outdated and antiquated.

As for resembling a controller, it's meant to be portable. If you can just buy a controller grip for that. And I owned four hinged Nintendo consoles. Never had an issue. If your systems are breaking so easily, you aren't taking proper care of them.

3G is useless, wi-fi is obviously a much better option. Also, why does a tiny screen need to be HD, it already has a far higher pixel density than any "HD" TV. Increasing the resolution is pointless and wasteful. No offense but your type of thinking is why we end up with systems like the Vita. Also, I am extremely delicate with my DS because it is poorly constructed, flakey garbage. I am hardly the only person who has issues with the clamshell design.

Wifi is awesome when you have access to it. You don't always have access to it. In a car or in a place with locked wifi, your on your own and you shouldn't be. There a huge difference. You seriously think that the 3DS screen is at all comparable to the Vitas or literally any modern phone? It's not even close to good enough. No offense, but you're obviously not. I'm not at all delicate with my DS. Never had an issue. I don't remember anyone breathing a sigh of releaf when the 2DS was released. I do remember how popular that GBA SP was, specifically because of its clamshell design.

Anyone who things that the Vita is a failure because it has 3G needs to think harder. It's a failure because it's trying to be a mobile console, and not a handheld.

They need to make a console that'll be financially sound. It needs to make money the moment it's on the market and it needs to be inexpensive enough (~200$, like you said) for people to not gawk.

I had no expectations of what the Handheld after the GBA would be, and I was extremely surprised, but in a good way. Nintendo needs to do that again.

(Also, it's 'potential.')

Sorry but 3G is a feature that would inflate the cost only to be utilized by a handful of users, it is a flat out terrible idea. The pixel density doesn't need to be as good as a smart phone and if it did, good luck achieving that for a reasonable price. Just because you haven't had a problem with the clamshell design doesn't mean that other people haven't. Hell, there are other users in this very thread criticizing it. Newsflash, the SP was popular because the original GBA was a steaming pile of battery eating trash, not because it was a clamshell. Finally, where did I state that the Vita failed because of 3G? It failed largely because it was too expensive and including a "HD" OLED screen along with nearly useless features such as 3G were only part of that problem.

3G is a technicality. I just mean and always online console. Nintendo has already expressed interest in the idea. I got it directly from them. There is obviously a very Nintendo way of handling it. There won't be a subscription, or they wouldn't have brought up the kindle situation to begin with. It would still have Wifi. Downloads could just be restricted to that if it's such a big issue.

If downloads are restricted what's the point -_-

And every company ever experiments with ideas. Doesn't change that 80% of them are terrible and get thrown out fast.

And always online console would just eat battery, and users would probably hardly ever use the 4G anyway. Not to mention, there are plenty of places that don't have good connection from one internet provider or the other, and making them pay extra for games for a serivce they can't even use is just terrible.

Nintendo would be wise to just skip past the idea nad release 2 different models, if even that.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

seems like a dream.
ps360 struggle to achieve 720p resolution, why a handheld would have 1080p resolution?
i can see it only if they keep 2 screens.
2 480/540p screens seems more resonable.

but, we realy need a 3DS sucessor?

I mean, we needed DS because we already had technology to put 3D games in handhelds, but GBA wasnt capable of that.
We needed 3DS cos it was capable to do what DS didnt. 3D pokemon battles, monster hunter, smash bros, youkai, etc, DS couldnt handle these games.

Now, 3DS can handle every game that is targeted to a handheld.
Vita is almost dead.
And the big question is: a more powerfull handheld would have a better change against smartphones than 3DS? I dont think so.

and about technology, what they can sell for 150$ to 250$? I dont expect something with HD screen and as powerfull as ps3.

i think is better make new versions of 3DS. maybe a second analog.

the only thing  that calls for a 3DS sucessor are the games.

when the time for a new mario kart/pokemon gen/2d mario/etc comes, they will bring us the next handheld, but only bcos of the filosophy of 1 of these games per console.

so, i dont expect a sucessor too soon.

What I expect

5-5.8 inch 1280x720 LCD (cheap to manufacture, good quality). Single screen.
Close to Wii U visuals at 960x540/30 fps.
May 2016 launch (Japan), June 2016 (North America), July 2016 (Europe)
ARM + Qualcomm chipset (similar to Adreno 430 chip but tailored to gaming)
NFC reader built-in
$200-$220 launch

2-2.5GB LPDDR4 RAM (1GB reserved for OS)

Will have a "home" version release in fall 2016 (plays the same games, only in 1080P/60 FPS). Console will be similar in size to an AppleTV (microconsole). Will be cheap. Because chips are largely off the shelf cellphone/tablet components, price will scale down quickly allowing Nintendo to make a profit quickly.

Super Mario Galaxy 3 will be a launch title, Animal Crossing Next will follow soon after. Mario Kart 9 for Nov/December 2016.

Unified account for both machines. Same games. Will have decent third party support. Youkai Watch 3 HD, Monster Hunter 5 HD, EA will even return with Madden/FIFA/Star Wars. Bulk of support will come from Japan. With one unified platform, software delays will not be as prevalant.
