Forums - Nintendo - What do you want from Nintendo's next handheld?

Im not sure that mobile devices are killing handheld consoles, I think its more like they are causing sales to revert back to pre-DS/PSP levels.

Gameboy+Gameboy Color sold just under 120 million from 1989-2003, which accounts for 2 generations worth of sales.

Gameboy Advance did a little over 80 million from 2001-2008

Basically before DS, Nintendo handhelds sold on average about 65 million each generation which 3DS is on track to do.

You need to look at it as a trend, rather than hoping handhelds will hit a floor and stop falling. The average isn't what's important, what's important is that handheld sales grew steadily until 2008, and then declined ever since.

If the 3DS has a successor, expect its market to also decline, perhaps even by 50%. If handled properly, Nintendo could probably still make money off a 30-40 million lifetime handheld, but the generation after that could be very problematic. And if you look at Nintendo software's ability to push hardware, you've gotta wonder if they aren't better off consolidating that system-selling into just one platform instead of two.

Then again, perhaps the way forward is Smash Bros. Nintendo simply develops one game with both a handheld and home console skin. Customers can buy the game and console twice if they want to, or choose the one they like best.

Idk the trend I see is that Nintendo handhelds sell 60-80 million over 6-7 year lifespans with the exception of DS. We dont know yet if the declne will continue or not, we wont know until next generation.

I really don't like any of Nintendo's handhelds as far as hardware goes due to poor ergonomics and controls (among other things). I don't want gimmicks and I don't want unnecessary features like 3G or a HD screen jacking up the price. I want a simple, comfortable, affordable handheld that resembles a DualShock controller as closely as possible. Also, no more wimpy hinges ruining your otherwise reliable hardware.

Sounds like you want the Vita.

That's like saying I wanted the PSP when thinking about a future DS.

3G? Why? You're just pushing up the price for a data connection that is outclassed in every way now by HSPA+ and LTE.

Because it's stupid to have a mobile device in this day and age with no internet connection.

That's what wi-fi is for.

You cannot access the e-shop over 3G. 3G is only good for VERY light web browsing; for downloads the speeds will be absmal. The minimum acceptable speed for light gaming online and downloading games would be HSPA+ (AKA 4G, non-LTE), and the sensors for that would just push the price up $20-40, not to mention paying for a plan. If you are using the e-shop, you are going to burn through hundreds of megabytes of data, if not more than a gigabyte, and a plan for that would be $10-20 per month, minimum.

Outsourcing that cost to retail games would be such a terrible idea. Most users would never bother playing online or downloading games online (at least not to an extent worth paying for), so all users will have to take the price hike for a service only a small minority will ever use to any relevant extent.

I would be fine with them having 2 different version, one with 4G and one without, but whoever purchases the 4G version should be ready to pay a monthly price and not demand that Nintendo incorporate the price into game cost.

3G and HD aren't unnecessary features. They are extremely nessecary. They are industry standards. A handheld without them in 2016 will be extremely outdated and antiquated.

As for resembling a controller, it's meant to be portable. If you can just buy a controller grip for that. And I owned four hinged Nintendo consoles. Never had an issue. If your systems are breaking so easily, you aren't taking proper care of them.

3G is useless, wi-fi is obviously a much better option. Also, why does a tiny screen need to be HD, it already has a far higher pixel density than any "HD" TV. Increasing the resolution is pointless and wasteful. No offense but your type of thinking is why we end up with systems like the Vita. Also, I am extremely delicate with my DS because it is poorly constructed, flakey garbage. I am hardly the only person who has issues with the clamshell design.

The kindle fire has no issues with downloads. I don't think incorporating it into retail games is an issue at all. It's more than just online gaming. It's everything. A monthly price is not an option for a Nintendo handheld. If the kindles books can stay affordable, so can these taxed games. The whole point is that no one is feeling the impact of the 3G/4G service. How do you think Nintendo can let you play online games for free as it is?
