I don't think so

I've read a study a few weeks ago (sorry I can't find it at the moment) that showed that Mobile apps are more effective  as a tool for building a powerful brand rather than a source of income.

If you read Nintendo's here

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/140130/03.html

Nintendo is looking at mobile to build their brand rather than getting an extra source of income.

Essentially, smartphones and tablets will simply be another place where they can market their games and hardware

This is from 2012 but says something similar.

Well there is the other point that a lot of Nintendo's games simply wouldn't work that great on mobile.

The top grossing mobile games are not ports of old button based titles. I played Megaman 2 on iPhone ... it was a terrible experience.

they dont have to be top grossing, just sell enough to make a profit which im sure they could do.

Offering a crappy product, in the hopes of make a quick profit, is a terrible way to run a business.  Especially when all of the potential sales would come from name recognition.  It would certainly erode trust in their product.

??? who said anything about releasing a crappy product? where did you even get that from? The products wont be crappy if they do it right

im saying people will see Mario and buy it for 5 dollars cause its mario and they already have a phone. They do the same for Sonic and others. Their is no "smart" or "dumb" in that decision.

It's not as simple as you imply

Charging $5 or even $1 for a game in the mobile makert isn't a wise decision especially when there are thousands upon thousands of other games that essentially advertise being free.

Why do you think so many devs opt for the f2p model?

Adapting their older games to the f2p isn't as easy as it may seem as well.

Then there is issue of discoverability and profitability.

Not to mention they are essentially diluting their brand and eating away into their own handheld business.

The mobile market is nothing but an opportunity to make a quick buck, for a company like Nintendo there is no opportunity for growth - they should focus on stengthening their core business and divesifying with other longterm ventures (like QOL)

naw you're making it more complicated than it is. By that logic there would be NO priced games on mobile and we know thats not the case. Plenty of non free games out there and people do buy them. Dont see why they wouldnt buy Ninty's stuff.

And the differences in revenue from priced to f2p games is HUGE. Investors would be mad if it weren't f2p.

I'm not sure why, that with pretty much everyone here disagreeing with you, you're so sure that mobile VC would be a great idea for Nintendo. It could very well happen like this:

1. Nintendo puts retro Mario on iOS/Android for free (profits from ad revenue). Revenue spike, then fall.

2. Investors pressure nintendo to release more games on smartphones.

3. The few casual who still buy nintendo hardware and software (mostly 3ds) stop buying. After all, mommy can always say "you already have Mario on your phone" whenever a kid asks for a new device to play the new games. The price difference is just too big.

4. Shareholders point to fledgling profits in the console division and push for it to be closed in favor of developing new games for mobile platforms. If the CEO is opposed to such a move, they'll elect one who isn't.

I'm not buying this for a minute.

But even if it is true, I really hope Nintendo doesn't go mobile anytime soon. It just wouldn't be Nintendo.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I remember a review for MM2. 2/10

It looks like even IGN gave the game a 1/10! I really don't want to know what Capcom managed to do with poor Mega Man 2 when porting the game to fucking iPhone!

They ported a precision platformer to a device with only a touch screen. They wanted that easy money and they didnt think it through...

They also ported Mega Man X to iPhone and that also failed as a game! Fuck Capcom for screwing up my favorite Mega Man games like that! >:(

If there ever was a company that desperately needed new management...

Scheming is common in any larger company. But since I do not want to see Nintendo dying, I hope Iwata will change his opinion or go soon. Nintendo needs to develop for attractive, up to date and competitive hardware. Best solution would be to develop an own tablet with a real button game pad while releasing older Pokemon and Mario games for Iphone and Android as a field test.

This makes about as much sense as a rumor that the POTUS's cabinet is plotting to oust him from office.

But I'm willing to entertain this rumor because it makes people reconsider how good they have it under Iwata. I think fans calling for his head don't realize what would happen to the company if they got what they wanted.
