im saying people will see Mario and buy it for 5 dollars cause its mario and they already have a phone. They do the same for Sonic and others. Their is no "smart" or "dumb" in that decision.

It's not as simple as you imply

Charging $5 or even $1 for a game in the mobile makert isn't a wise decision especially when there are thousands upon thousands of other games that essentially advertise being free.

Why do you think so many devs opt for the f2p model?

Adapting their older games to the f2p isn't as easy as it may seem as well.

Then there is issue of discoverability and profitability.

Not to mention they are essentially diluting their brand and eating away into their own handheld business.

The mobile market is nothing but an opportunity to make a quick buck, for a company like Nintendo there is no opportunity for growth - they should focus on stengthening their core business and divesifying with other longterm ventures (like QOL)

naw you're making it more complicated than it is. By that logic there would be NO priced games on mobile and we know thats not the case. Plenty of non free games out there and people do buy them. Dont see why they wouldnt buy Ninty's stuff.

Nintendo is already experimenting with f2p games anyway. There are two so far I'm aware of; those being Rusty's Real Deal Baseball and Steel Diver. They try to have a presence in the mobile markert as an additional revene source.

I don't think so

I've read a study a few weeks ago (sorry I can't find it at the moment) that showed that Mobile apps are more effective  as a tool for building a powerful brand rather than a source of income.

If you read Nintendo's here

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/140130/03.html

Nintendo is looking at mobile to build their brand rather than getting an extra source of income.

Essentially, smartphones and tablets will simply be another place where they can market their games and hardware

Well there is the other point that a lot of Nintendo's games simply wouldn't work that great on mobile.

The top grossing mobile games are not ports of old button based titles. I played Megaman 2 on iPhone ... it was a terrible experience.

they dont have to be top grossing, just sell enough to make a profit which im sure they could do.

Offering a crappy product, in the hopes of make a quick profit, is a terrible way to run a business.  Especially when all of the potential sales would come from name recognition.  It would certainly erode trust in their product.

so what are you suggesting? they go multiplatform?

It's at least something they should consider, I mean the people that buy Nintendo hardware would still buy their games even if they released on other systems and you could also add in a probably quite large amount of people that have some interest in a couple Nintendo franchises but wouldn't buy a system especially for them.

I think we all know that software is the money maker in gaming, not hardware.

"Buy SSB5 on PS4 and get an exclusive character"

"Buy SSB5 on XB1 and get another exclusive character"

"Buy the new Zelda on PS4 and you get an exlusive dungeon to explore"

"Buy the new Zelda on XB1 and you can play as Zelda in MP"

Yeah, no thanks...

So you're saying Nintendo would do that stuff because? Maybe they don't want to screw with their fanbase just because they are multiplat.

Every other big third party developer does it. Dont see why Nintendo would say no to free money...

They hardly make dlc for their own system, why would they make it for other systems? And I don't think Nintendo would do that Because they wouldn't dare to risk it.

Just because priced games are in the market doesn't necessarily mean they are making money.

We are seeing cracks happening, please have a read here:

While I am a bit apprehenisive to call the mobile gaming market a bubble, but it sure looks like from my perspective .

Oversaturation, discoverability and profitability issues - this is the making of an unsustainable market. It's looking like a Zynga and social gaming situation again

Like I said before, it would be smart for nintendo to focus on their core business and long term ventures rather than following the quick dollar that may ultimate be fruitless

Dolphin emulator is quite popular ( Dolphin HD – 10,000,000+ downloads) and works on Windows, OS X, Linux, and Android.
"Everyone" wants to play Mario games if they are free.

Doesn't and will never play Wii U games.

You don't know what you are talking about.

I think they would jump on the chance.
