Forums - Gaming - How microsoft plan to stealthily bring back Always Online

The future is always online if you like it or not. Sony will do the same, and a few years after transition it will be the norm. Everything changes.

I was asking those questions in regards to PS Now. So the games you buy on PS Now can be played offline? I thought it was a streaming service? I don´t care if you can buy games physically, any game that you buy and cannot copy, resell or lend to someone else, has DRM attached to it. Every game I buy on XBLA has DRM, since they are all digital.

Such twist of logic to defend MS. I don't get it.

If you want to play Uncharted 1-3 or any other PS3 game you can..

1 - buy retail

2 - buy digital

3- rent on PS Now

You choose what you want. 3 requires Internet, the other two don't.

MS wants to make every game a service, which means they'll have always online DRM. So, if you want to play "future" (if this happens) XB1 games, you can:

1- buy retail

2- buy digital

But the problem is that regardless of your "choice", you'll always be subject to the same DRM. So effectively, your only "choice" is the equivalent of Sony's #3; the only one. And it so happens that it's the one that requires Internet.

So there is nothing in PS Now that prevent Sony to release games only on that service, making it mandatory to always be online in order to access them. That they haven´t done it yet doesn´t mean a thing, they have already built the infrastructure to be able to do it so they are going down the same route as MS, only in a different manner.

What is wrong with you people?

First to gergroy; People don't complain about having to be online to play multiplayer cause its called online multiplayer. Its a gameplay component of your game and if you want to play with other people across the world the only way to do that is to have a connected console. People complaining about this would be like saying people complain about having to put gas in their car for it to move.

and to phaedruss: First off, the games you mentioned doesn't require that you are online to play them. Being online adds to the experience but you can completely play the game in its entirity even if you don't sign in once to the internet.

What poeple are afraid of and complaining about is if you can't play ALL your games or they just won't work unless you are connected to the internet. And anything MS says about the cloud somehow making games better is bullshit if you know anything about how games are made or game engines run. The industry has ran games just fine for generations without the games itself having to offload processing duties to some mythical cloud. If you know anything about game design you would know how silly that even sounds.

The early crackdown tech they showed off shows a pretty clear practical demonstration of how off loading things to "cloud" could have some very real, positive effects to a game.  Especially when it comes to destructable environments and rendering lots of objects on screen.  Wouldnt help with textureing or anything like that, but obviously there are some pretty cool uses for this kind of technology if it ever actually gets to a point that it could be used.

I don't think so. It's not like the games on your phone have to be connected to the internet to play them. Ofcourse internet gives more functionality, but in the case of candy crush and some of gamelofts games, the core experience is fully playable offline.

As of right now, unless you want a DRM system and want to make your dedicated gaming fanbase angry, there is no practical reason why a company should want always online.

Since piracy is mad on PC, DRM/Always online for steam and many pc games is a necessity. Piracy isn't happening on current gen consoles so there's no reason why sony would opt for always online.

No, because that infrastructure consists of PS3s and all PS3 games are available outside of PS Now.

Fireburn, Steam doesn't have always on DRM. Not much on PC does, other than Diablo 3..

So... Because they have only announced ps3 games for it so far... They will always only have ps3 games on it?

Do I need to make a PSA about how the cloud is bullshitimpractical?

Even Microsoft basically replaced it with the term Dedicated Servers, they didn't mention the Cloud one time during E3.

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

Uhhuh.. how and why on earth will a company introduce a feature that generated such a vocal negative response from its target audience...

Are you for real?

Yay!!!

Yes, well, did you notice how i put cloud in quotes?  Still the idea they have been talking about is off loading processes, whether you use the term cloud or dedicated servers, they are talking about the same thing...

Well, isn't PS Now Sonys first step into this as well? Or do people actually think they don't want this future as well? Personally, I hope both companies go this route sooner rather than later.

Sony and Microsoft had both taken baby steps into using the cloud last gen with cloud saving. This gen Sony is still taking a step while Microsoft is taking a huge risk on the cloud as a whole. Sony is using it for their network and Microsoft is trying to sell the full power of the cloud on people, but so far its a failure. Hasn't been a full year though yet, so we'll see. We're almost there though.
