NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube. What do these have in common? They were platforms that could produce games at, or beyond the competition at the time of their release. Do you know who was in charge and responsible for their release? Yamauchi.

Wii and Wii-U. What do these two consoles have in common? They are platforms that can't produce games at or beyond the competition. Do you know who was in charge and responsible for their release? Iwata.

I respect Iwata and admire him as a developer/producer. He helped create some of the best Nintendo games of all time. But as a president? I grew up in the 80's. I am a child of the 80's. My mother bought me my first console in 1986 and it was an NES. The Nintendo I grew up with had a different boss and as such, a completely different way of doing things. I liked THAT Nintendo's philosophy/hardware/software better as did the general CORE GAMING public. The NES and SNES are legend. The N64 was home to GAMES of legend.

Will we say the same for Wii-U in thirty years? I don't think so. So imo, Nintendo needs someone new at the helm. We need someone who has guts and takes risks. Someone more cutthroat like Mr. Yamauchi.

What I read:

"Nintendo needs someone who has guts and takes risks by doing exactly what the better-funded competitors are doing. Innovation!"

You know what Iwata was responsible for? Nintendo's most succesful period of all time.

You know what Yamauchi was responsible for? Nintendo declining generation after generation in sales. The "CORE GAMING PUBLIC" you so love abandoned Nintendo wholesale when the N64 was launched. Nintendo became the "kiddie" company and Sony/MS were the "cool" places to be.

Then Nintendo decided to ignore a demographic that abandoned them and suddenly all of them start crying "NINTENDO DOESN'T CARE ABOUT CORE GAMERS! WHY DON'T THEY MAKE GAMES LIKE S/NES,N64 AND GAMECUBE ANYMORE?!" when they were the same people laughing at Mario Sunshine and Zelda WW being "kiddie gay shit"

Freakin' hilarious. I'm starting to think we're the fools for indulging him to this degree.

He was polite through the whole thread. You guys weren't however and in my opininion should be moderated (at least warned or PM'd) for it.

People with differing opinions are important on this forum, we need to encourage debate notstiffle it.

He was being reasonable and polite, though he made a few legit mistakes (DLC complaint), but his posts should be respected and replied to minus the ad hominems.

His opening post in the thread talks about how Nintendo games are getting more and more childish but follows it up by saying that the new 3ds game is not for children so that is bad, then goes on to say that the tablet of the wii-u is awful and that it's never needed yet complains that it can run out of batteries... The statements are contradictions on themselves and really do just invite people pointing that out imo I guess it depends what way you take his original statement since that was what set the tone for most of the very negitive replies he has gotten during this thread.

Differing opinions is 1 thing, but critisizing a company for having more childish games and in the same line critisize them for having a non childish game... then it's just a damned if they do, damned if they don't attitude towards Nintendo and there is no room or reason to debate.

Not the right man for the job. I suppose it could be worse though.

Why not the right man for the job?

Making a new portable system without the famous name Gameboy  that is more successful as well the Gameboy line.

Winning last gen with selling ~5x consoles as the gen before.
Making a 3ds that is still winning
somewhat failing with WiiU.

Its 75% success.

Pretty good imo.

Past success is not enough to justify holding a position as important as Iwatas, the 3DS will probably not sell more then half of what the DS sold and the Wii U is not "somewhat failing", it'll probably end up selling only 1/5th of what the Wii sold.

Something at Nintendo has to change and that starts at the top.

Are you saying he done too well with the Wii and DS and he can't recreate that same magic again twice only once with the 3DS? I'm sure he is working his ass off to make the Wii-U seem like a better choice for gamers and to give those non-gamers who bought a wii a reason to want to upgrade their hardware.

I'm saying that he completely failed to recreate the success of the DS and Wii with the 3DS and Wii U, that he lost a huge part of the audience he gathered in one generation in a matter of a couple years, that is bad, plain and simple.

And sure he's working his ass off, great, most CEOs do, but all of that doesn't matter if you don't produce results, you don't get a medal for effort. If Nintendos top lacks the vision to compete in todays market then the top needs to change.

Oh shit....... Nintendo is doomed!

Exactly. I'm all for healthy debate and a diversity of opinions, but those opinions should be presented in a reasonable manner. You can't come in and make groundless blanket statements about a company and think that the old "I'm actually a fan of _____, so this gives me a free pass to say whatever I want without answering for it!" excuse is going to cover you.

"The Wii-U is still overpriced, no tablet-less version is available, the Wii-U still has no games and no 3rd party support. Nintendo games also get more and more childish and even adult games like Tomodachi Life are marketed against small children which is scaring away the original target audience. I wonder if Iwata is willing to change all that?"

The part in bold is something I have a big problem with. The Wii U has 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, A Zelda he may or may not have yet played, a Zelda spinoff coming in a couple of months, Wonderful 101, two Bayonetta games in a few months, a GTA style game in Lego City Stories, Pikmin, a Sonic game available now and another one coming soon. Sprinkle in a few third party multiplats.  If you don't own a Wii U yet, that is plenty of content to hold you down for a while, and that's not even mentioning the promise of things to come like Splatoon, Zelda 2015, Star Fox, SMT x FE, Devil's Turd, XBC X and likely a Metroid and Animal Crossing.

I'm not going to waste much time addressing the "Nintendo games get more and more childish" bit. I just don't have the energy, and I don't feel like it's worth my time, quite frankly. If he can't accept the fact that most  first party Nintendo games have never been about blood, cursewords and titties, yet it still brings us content like Metroid, Bayonetta and X, that's his problem, and it makes me wonder just what part of Nintendo is he a fan of. When I was a young teen, I went through a phase where I thought Mario was childish and I wanted my games to be "grown up." Then I got older and realized just how childish I and some of the "mature" games I wanted to play (GTA) really were.

At least we know Nintendo won't go third-party for awhile longer. I'm positive that "bile problem" Iwata had was an attack by Hirai in order to be able to take over Nintendo. Stay safe, Iwata!
