I think that the X1 actually came out with its TV functionality at the wrong time (late). More and more people are ditching cable tv for streaming internet options.
I know that the X1 does Netflix and whatnot, but they definitely put effort into a declining feature.

Is social media integration that important that you must know who's online while watching TV? People watch TV to watch TV. You play games when you are in that mode. I don't see how "so and so is online" popping up while you are watching tv makes for anything special regarding gaming and entertainment. If anything, too much integration kills the immersion whether watching TV or gaming. It's already annoying enough having "so and so is online" pop up while watching netflix. I'd imagine a bunch of ADHD gamers are the only ones who like that stuff. On another note though, besides the NFL app that I could see serving a purpose especially when it comes to fantasy league, everything else is just fluff trying to sell consumers integration that's not needed.

Not sure I get where you are going. The X1 does both. It does streaming from your PC and it does App streaming. It allows you to connect your Cable to your cosole for one seamless streaming. IF MS every get off their butts about the Miracast(Wi-Fi Direct) then you would be able to stream content from any device that support Miracast to your X1 without any additional hardware. I am looking forward to this feature as I would be able to share my Windows 8.1 desktop through my X1. This would be a better solution to introduce a much better media center type of environement. I am thinking of creating a metro app that does exactly that. It would automatically load when you Miracast your desktop or laptop to the X1.

Did you ignore the entire last generation? Xbox 360 led the way in bringing things like Netflix/HBO Go to consoles, and every person I know that has one uses it for watching shows in addition to gaming. To think that consumers are so singularly focused is to completely ignore the last 10 years. Even Wii's were used to watch Netflix, despite it being the worst platform to do it on.
Consoles are now multimedia hubs, that's how they are viewed.
I can't be the only person that thinks that Sony/MS probably realize that people doing things other than gaming on their consoles isn't that profitable. Now that PS+/XBLG are de-facto required for online play, the only extra revenue they can get is by charging per use for non-gaming stuff (movie/music/tv show licensing for individual downloads, or a subscription based service).
Still, that's peanuts compared to someone buying even one major release a month. If people game less and derp around watching TV more, that's a net loss.

Actually MS and Sony want people who use their console for things other than gaming to use their service which are paid services. They both want you to get hooked on using their console and being tied to their services which would mean they make money no matter if you are playing games or not. MS and Sony have music, Movies and TV streaming from their own services.
PS+/xblg are cheap though. Unless you buy content from Sony/Ms (always the worst deal compared to Netflix/etc), someone watching videos and ESPECIALLY watching TV is reducing their profits vs someone buying new games for the console.

To be fair, you can be logged in to your ps4 dashboard and it wont tell you if/when your friends log in or out.
However, if i wanted to know such info while watching tv, i would just look at the app on my phone.
Additionally, my TV and many other peoples tv's can, if we really wanted that info, do picture in picture, or side by side video.

The X1 doesn't need a cable input because they are making deals with cable company to have their Apps. The reason these same Apps are not on the Sony consoles is because Sony is in competition with the cable companies. Today the 360 has Time Warner, Xfinity, Comcast, Version. For people who use those services, they can cut the cable box completely.

Annnnd the entire point of having the hdmi passthrough becomes moot, why daisy chain all your hardware through the console when you can simply run them as apps?.
might have something to do with people not wanting to have to subscribe to a service to access a service theyre already subscribed to, just an idea.
