To be fair, you can be logged in to your ps4 dashboard and it wont tell you if/when your friends log in or out.
However, if i wanted to know such info while watching tv, i would just look at the app on my phone.
Additionally, my TV and many other peoples tv's can, if we really wanted that info, do picture in picture, or side by side video.

$500 for more power consumption to watch tv when the only tangible bonus is overlay of notifications is an expensive feature, you can say "but it has a tv guide too", yeah.. and so does just about every tv, sat box, cable box, freeview box and freesat box the world over..

Until the xbox one has cable inputs (psst, it doesnt) then a cable box will always be needed, dont confuse hdmi passthrough for an actual signal tuner.

The X1 doesn't need a cable input because they are making deals with cable company to have their Apps. The reason these same Apps are not on the Sony consoles is because Sony is in competition with the cable companies. Today the 360 has Time Warner, Xfinity, Comcast, Version. For people who use those services, they can cut the cable box completely.
