If gamers wouldn't care about TV functions we wouldn't have like 100 different TV apps on the consoles (already for PS3 and Xbox 360). We have them because they are a success on these consoles because most gamers are interested in TV stuff.

you and j_allard really have short term memory problems. j_allard thinks that Xbox fans didn't brag about multiplatform games performing better on 360 and here you are thinking that the mantra of Xbox fans last gen wasn't "we just care about the games" when talks of extra features boosting value came up, because you could get a 360 for cheaper and that's all that mattered.

Something I think is a hidden negative of the HDMI passthrough is the sizable power waste that happens when using it. In retrospect it would have been wise to add a dirt cheap arm CPU so that it would use 5w during TV, rather than 100+w.

I think the 'wear and tear' is a bit silly. Probably almost no wear/tear if there is no disc spinning.

However I think the power usage is wasteful unless you're heavily using snap/etc.

Hopefully the next revision of XB1 addresses that. The power brick sucks a good bit of juice even when the unit isn't technically 'on'.

I had to do a rough electrical audit of my house for a solar technologies, and I measured how much power the X1 is pulling. The numbers are higher than what I had seen reported before launch and thought some may find them interesting.

• In game: 125 watts

• Standy(with instant on): 33 watts

• Watching TV: 122 watts

The biggest concern is how much power the Xbox is consuming while you are watching TV.

To put things in perspective my 52 inch Vizio draws 185 watts, so that's a 66% increase in power to watch TV with the xbox connected.

The PS4 uses a good bit of juice in use as well. So someone using the PS4 to stream is using similar power to the XB1. But in the XB1's case, say you're using the XB1 to tune your cable box to your TV :

That means you're using :

Cable Box (15-75w depending on model)

XB1 (100w+)

TV (??W, too varied to mention)

Adding a little ARM hardware to the XB1 could cut that down to 5W or so, as the main system could truly go idle while the TV tuning is in use.

I'm probably lying because my wife and I don't have seperate TVs in seperate rooms we watch different things on because we each hate what the other one likes? And there is no grey area in your mind between living different lives in seperate rooms much of the day and "spending 100% of their time together?"

I have a few 'unquie' interests too, but that doesn't mean that we spend much of each day in seperate rooms just so we can each do seperate things. In fact, the Xbox One's 'snap' feature helps with this. As does the Wii U's gamepad. I'll admit we spend some parts of each day on seperate computing devices in the same room, but we are still in communication with each other. Not to mention that most of our 'alone time' is spent during our daily commutes to our jobs, and that the amount of time we can possibly spend together isn't huge because we are at work most of the day. And several hours of the rest of it is spent with our infant son. We certainly aren't eager to sit in seperate rooms for some of the little remaining time.

take ps3/x360 install base and compare number of netflix subscribers to non subscribers and you have your answer (psst,  a larger portion use consoles fir games only)  and why is this exactly? 

here i'll tell you. 

cable boxes are better,  tivos and similar can actually record shows, the people that want tv AND games simply turn off thier console and,  as luck woukd have it,  the tv features there were there all along,  still are there. 

Not sure why you are using Netflix as your measurement.  I am sure if you used all of the media apps and othe features of the PS3 and 360 it would show that people on those consoles use a lot of those features and may even clock in more time doing things other than gaming.  With my family its probably more media than games as far as hours go but thats because the whole family use the media feautures and only a few play games.
