Reality? Oh Lord. & which company makes shitty hardware? You are mistaken because of one early generation of failed hardware. Try two or three in a row from Sony. Two mainly. Nintendo makes the best hardware. The first xbox was a tank and the One seems the same so far. PS4 is a tank also so far.

I have an original PS1 and PS2 that still work and I have yet to have a PS3 go out on me. But that is probably due to the fact I sell them and buy another one once they got around 3 years old. Yet I know several people who have had 4/5 360s go out. Including back when MS tried to get away with that 3 month warranty.

I know no one who didnt have that shitty disc read error where you couldnt play the games anymore. More problems also. Rebuys to. There was also a lawsuit about that as well. It also happened after warranty almost like any product.

Have replaced  blu-ray lasers in over 200 PS3s and know numerous other repair shops and hobbiest who have done the same. PS2s would stop reading DVDs and only read CD. was very common. Sony is not the Lord almighty of console build quality. That crown goes to Nintendo. xbox 360 had issues no argument there. Original xbox (Tank) very few have ever had issues. You need to learn what wear and tear is. It's obvious you favor sony...good for you. but to call using Hdmi in "wear and tear" is stupid.

Hahahaha! You think that people who crouch on internet forums declaiming not to like anything other than video games are more numerous than well-rounded people who like video games AND watching television/netflix? Are you serious?!?! HAHAHAHAHA

take ps3/x360 install base and compare number of netflix subscribers to non subscribers and you have your answer (psst,  a larger portion use consoles fir games only)  and why is this exactly?

cable boxes are better,  tivos and similar can actually record shows, the people that want tv AND games simply turn off thier console and,  as luck woukd have it,  the tv features there were there all along,  still are there. 

Not sure why you are using Netflix as your measurement.  I am sure if you used all of the media apps and othe features of the PS3 and 360 it would show that people on those consoles use a lot of those features and may even clock in more time doing things other than gaming.  With my family its probably more media than games as far as hours go but thats because the whole family use the media feautures and only a few play games.

the free to use services are no indication so we can only go off of subscription required services, in which case its compatible to subscription required services that dont need a games console, hell some tv's can do most of them out of the box.

I believe the past people purchase console just for games but the market has become much bigger.  If you think about how many consoles sold between the 360, PS3 and Wii.  This generation people expect the 360 and PS4 to have the same abilities as the PS3 and 360.  People expect this gen to be entertainment systems not just a game console.  As someone mention, Sony nor MS talk about their console as game console but entertainment devices.

We cannot go just by paid subs because by nature the consumer must have paid for the service weather or not they purchase a console.  Instead a true measurement of how people use their console is to measure how much time they actually play games or do other things like using media apps.  If people spend even 40% of their time doing something other than gaming on their game console then those other things become important enough to decide a purchase.

comparing time spent watching a movie or tv episode compared to time spent in a game is not really a ballanced way either, the average multiplayer gamer for example is likely to spend much longer in a game session than someone watching a movie, or tv episode.

And i would wager that streaming services are used a lot more for tv episodes than they are movies, which reduces the time spent watching media.

@Bolded:  I agree that I stream TV shows more than movies.  The thing is I have multiple TV shows I watch every day.  From Hulu, Netflix and Crunckyroll, I probably watch about 30 shows a week.  Watching all those shows can easily outstrip my gaming time even when I play MP.  I am more consistant watching those shows because i am more interested in what is happening then playing MP.  Also when there is a drought of new games and content to play, I still have those shows to entertain me.

I wonder if there how many shows other people track with their Apps that they watch daily.

Why would people use those other devices.  I cut my cable box because the PS3 and 360 provide the on demand apps I need.  Consuming TV shows and movies on the PC/Laptop/Tablet is for bit size on the road scenerio.  I highly doubt people who watch their main shows use those devices when they have a console connected to their TV.  Also not everyone has a smart TV that has apps.  I do not and I do not play on buying a new TV until the ones I have no longer work.  From my understanding people do not replace TVs unless there is such a superios option or their current one break down.
