Steam was launched less than a year after xbox live. Large online infastructures would have existed in the next gen with or without xbox. Yes, they did it first, and yes, I give them credit for it. But I don't think they deserve as much credit as they get for it. They did introduce acheivements, which are fun, but not that massive of a deal.
Meanwhile sony introduced PS+, steam made massive sales popular, and nintendo did make motion gaming big even if just for one generation. Sony and nintendo have made many innovations with games themselves. Valve made many as well, with their games and with online gaming and infastructure.
While microsoft introduced unified networks, they also introduced unified networks that you pay for. The strategies microsoft employs to "make " games hinders gamers, considering they more or less pay to keep games off of other platforms instead of publishing original content.
I think valve should be on this list. I'd say valve, sony, and nintendo is a toss up for number one depending on how you slice it, and microsoft is last.
