Forums - Gaming - Who brought the most innovations in the console market? Last decade?

Which company?

Microsoft 118 19.16%

Sony 156 25.32%

Nintendo 339 55.03%

Total:613

Wow. At first I thought "wow, no one mentions Sony on the first page, there is hope". Then I read "Sony", looked at the username and sighed ;)

Nintendo without a doubt. They have their faults but lack of innovations isn't one of them...
N64 did it with analog controls, rumble paks and 4 players as standard, not even PS2 did this.
Gamecube then brought in wireless controls, analog buttons (great for racing games) and the ability
to link a GC to a GBA. Not to mention having a cool Phantasy Star online community.
Then Wii shook up the whole industry with motion control and virtual console with nil online fees.
Wii U has once again brought something new to the table, whereas the competition feels like their predecessors
but with more power.

because they brought the online infrastructure... and Achievements.

Not that I like those games, the pay for online infrastructure, or achievements.

I don't, though I've come around to achievements.

The motion controls of wii are close, but that's heavily dieing now.

Didn't Sega do this with Dreamcast? But I would agree that MS really pushed the online forward a lot so you have a very valid point there.

I'm not really sure which one is the most innovative, perhaps Nintendo. They always try out new things, mostly bad in my opinion though. And we also have the online which MS pushed a lot. The push of BD as a new medium was also great from Sony. And PS Now is something really fresh and new to look forward to, also people seem to like Kinect a lot for all its features. The new Wii U-pad? Hm, maybe. The Wii-motes were of course very cool when they came.

I think all three has been very innovative, or at least innovative enough, but I guess I'd have to say Nintendo.

And I would like to say that I think Nintendo is perhaps too innovative when it comes to their consoles, they push new things too far in my opinion. MS and Sony do it more causiosly and don't take it to extremes. Perhaps Kinect is a bit too pushy, and the Sixaxis thing Sony had. But overall I'd say they do it better. In my opinion.

they did. But it wasn't the behemoth it was on consoles until the Unified Xbox Live.

I would say it pushed it forward much more than being innovative.

Everything though that all 3 companies have done, have been done in the past, to some extent, with varying degrees of success.
IE Gaming online was on PC's a decade prior. The wii wasn't even the first time motion controls was on a nintendo machine
(The Powerglove was done by Mattel for NES in 1989)

When its all said and done...Sony.

Eyetoy was the first major camera on the market for console games so you can have camera tracking.

-No notable games

VR Headset

-Not out yet to know if innovative or not.

Two player 3D TV for gaming (Yes...you heard right.)

-Didn't catch on.

touch pad (See Killzone:Shadowfall)

-Its a laptop pad

Six axis

-Didn't catch on

Controller speakers

-Done with the Wii

Move/ PSEye combo was very innovative in its combined approach to gaming.

-Done with the Wii

PSN Plus

-Not sure what makes this innovative to gaming as a whole since it has less than 5 million members.

Sony"s "The Tester"

-Yet another reality show that ended 2 years ago

Playstation Now

-Not out yet to be considered innovative.

All first party made and quality.

-Nintendo

You know what, I'm changing my answer to Nintendo.

You're just looking for reasons when the product was quality even though the games werent there fore them. Your negativity towards what Sony has done is astounding.

Thats what you took from that whole thing? Lol seems like you're looking for reasons adding in that VR and Playstation Now when we havent seen their impact on gaming. And come on...The Tester?? Lol ooook.

I think Nintendo and Sega did a lot to drive the console market, but in the last decade it has to have been Microsoft.

Microsoft

Pros
- Paved the way for Xbox Live and PSN.
- XBLA helped usher in digital distribution and made smaller developers into million sellers.
- Kinect, innovative piece of technology, but it's not great for controlling games.
- Lead the way in introducing multi-media features to consoles.

Cons
- Monitized the subscription service to Xbox Live.
- Played a large role in making DLC common practice. Nice idea but it gets abused by publishers now.

Top 5 Most Anticipated Games:

- Quantum Break
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Destiny
- The Division
- Final Fantasy XV

Personally I can't decide. Each of them brought something great to the table which is why I still love gaming in general.

10 years ago was 2004, so it can't be anybody but Nintendo since all 6th gen consoles were already out at the time hence making the Wii the only console with something actually new with innovation packed into an actual product instead of an evolution like the 360 and PS3. You can't even argue anything else, the thread is not created to be fair TBH. Xbox Live came about in 2002 so the whole online thing doesn't count, cross game chat is also an evolution instead of innovation so that doesn't count, Xbox also already had HDD built in so internal storage doesn't count. Sony didn't do jack shit other than charge their console for 600 dollars because of blu-ray that most people don't even use these days due to online streaming so it's not big enough to count against motion control, bigger disc based storage is an evolution too so that doesn't count.

This thread is balls and is greatly in Nintendo's favor.

which they all truly fail at if you read my other post.

All three of those just brought previous Tech to consoles. Or in nintendo's case, copy something that was done 20 years ago on their very own console.

All everyone did was popularize and improve previously invented things.
