I think Nintendo and Sega did a lot to drive the console market, but in the last decade it has to have been Microsoft.
Microsoft
Pros
- Paved the way for Xbox Live and PSN.
- XBLA helped usher in digital distribution and made smaller developers into million sellers.
- Kinect, innovative piece of technology, but it's not great for controlling games.
- Lead the way in introducing multi-media features to consoles.
Cons
- Monitized the subscription service to Xbox Live.
- Played a large role in making DLC common practice. Nice idea but it gets abused by publishers now.
