Forums - Nintendo - Batman Arkham Knight not coming to WiiU. Warner slowing down support?

Is this the last year we see core support from third parties

Yes 224 68.71%

No 100 30.67%

Total:324

Engines have absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand. Wii U is an HD console, and it's GPU is rather modern. Everything at this point in the game is scalable, or at least should be if a developer is worth half a shit.

It is somewhat curious, if you consider that Arkham City (with it's extra content), only sold around 200k or so on Wii U, yet they found that to be enough to justify porting Origins onto it. Origins has, by the way, sold about 150k so far, which isn't GREAT numbers by any stretch, but it's enough for them to have at least broke even. In fact, I seem to remember Ubisoft saying that with the money it cost them to port a game to Wii U, that selling anything over 100k on the system was enough to bring in a profit. Not the million seller type or profit every company is after these days, of course, but profit regardless.

Speaking of Ubisoft, I'm rather sure that we will continue to see support from them, even with their delaying Watch_Dogs nonsense. I do think the next Assassin's Creed will be on Wii U, because III and IV have both sold over 150k, III actually hitting around 250ish. Rayman has sold decently, though I still think as a Feb. 2013 exclusive it would have sold better on Wii U. I also think that Call of Duty has done well enough for Activision to bring the next CoD to Wii U as well.

Regardless, Wii U will continue to see games like Just Dance, Skylanders, Disney Infinity, etc. And WB will most likely continue with the LEGO titles, at the very least. Although it's also curious that they are porting that Origins mobile game to Wii U eShop still. In fact considering the healthy eShop sales a lot of games are seeing, considering the user base, I'm not sure why some of these publishers don't at least bring some of their games as digital only downloads.

I've been saying this since the day the specs of the Wii-U were revealed: Once thrid party support for PS360 dries up, Wii-U dries up. They are not going to make a whole engine to release on Wii-U.

Though this was before i knew third party support would already be pretty much gone by now.

Blimey. How many times..? They won't have to use a different engine for the Wii U. It's going to be easier for developers to port between the Wii U, PS4 and One than it is to port between the Wii U, PS3 and 360.

And with regards to the difference in power between the 3 current gen consoles it really isn't that big of a deal. The Wii U is quite capable of handling downscaled ports from the PS4 and One. You'll have lower native resolution, less AA, maybe downscaled textures, less environmental effects and more pop-in of geometry and textures - at the worst

Poor wii-u, not looking good.

I love how people who probably have never programmed anything in their life just throw stuff like this around, like it's as easy as eating cake or something.

Having only 1/6th of the usable RAM isn't a big deal now? Having one chip that maybe can generate 300-400 GFLOPS versus a target platform that clocks in at 1.8TFLOPS is no big deal?

I'm sure Nintendo could port Super Mario 3D World to the 3DS, it's not a big deal to port it from the Wii U right? It has a "relatively" modern GPU too.

Warner seem to be pretty staunch WiiU supporters, putting out Lego, Injustice and Batman games, but it seems the new Batman is PS4/XB1/PC only. So is this the end of support from Warner outside of the Lego videogames?

The other two question marks left now are Ubisoft and Assassins Creed, and Activision and Call of Duty.

It's pretty obvious WiiU will always get Just Dance, Skylanders and Rayman. But could this be the last year of annual core support for the WiiU?

No, they're just shifting to the 8th generation. They are dropping Wii U as they are dropping PS3 and X360.

So far we had mostly cross gen titles. Now we will start seeing more and more 8th gen games.

Therefore, I speculate that Assassin's Creed will also eventually move to the 8th gen while Call Of Duty may continue cross gen (once the 7th gen titles came also to Wii).

Expect 99% of multiplats to miss the Wii U. However, 3rd party exclusives will be plenty on the Wii U

That may all be right but you are forgetting one thing: Developers are tired of cramming their games into small ram amounts. After eight years of counting bytes on last gen consoles, they now see roughly 6G of ram. Continuing to cram their new code into WiiU's 1G is just not worth the pain, particularly since the WiiiU is losing contact with the other consoles in total sales numbers. In simple words: it's not worth the pain for large software projects.
