It's not like the Wii U can be saved, so pretty much anything Nintendo will do will look half-assed. A Wii Sports sequel goes against the very idea of the Wii U, so it probably wouldn't help anyway. They might as well try to do something with the Gamepad, because the chances for success are similar; the difference is that those people who are interested in the Wii U care more about the Gamepad, so there should at least be more satisfied existing and soon-to-be owners, provided Nintendo can come up with something worthwhile.

What can they even sequelize here?
There's only a limited numbers of sports that make sense with a Wiimote and appeal to a casual, no one's dying to play Wii Sports soccer.
Tennis, Golf, and Bowling are the main ones that people like, that actually make sense with a Wiimote, and have the most universal appeal. If you follow the usual game strategy of sequelizing, you would make those games deeper/more realistic.
But even that doesn't really work, people complain if the games are too realistic/deep, they have to remain painfully barebones and simple, that's the whole point of the product's initial appeal. People are complaining even about Wii Sports Club that the more realistic WM+ makes things like tennis harder to play.
Mini-game compilations in general are just going out of style. Nintendo has sequelized Wii Fit, Mario & Sonic, Wii Party (all 8-20 million sellers on the Wii) for Wii U and none of them are selling great ... it's a fad that ran out of gas. Even Nintendo I think deep down knows this which is why they're trying different things to get the games out there ... heck they were basically giving Wii Fit U away for free, lol.
