And the PS4 WILL at least challenge the PS2 as the king of home consoles. You can print it! |
And around $14b in debt

With over 160 billion in business assets.
Like I said, Sony going out of business? Not going to happen.

19bn cash?
I think its best to look at the balance sheet in these circumstances rather thn a snapshot of selective data:
So, from the BALANCE SHEET
Cash, cash equivalents and short term investments:
March 2011: $19.99bn
March 2012: $19.14bn
March 2013: $16.17bn (huge drop)
Almost $4bn burned through in 2 years.
Net tangible assets: (true measure after taking into account assets, liabilities and stockholder equity)
March 2011: $20.3bn
March 2012: $11.5bn
March 2013: $10.9bn
Net tangible assets have halved in 2 years, dropped by $20bn
There are real reasons for downgrades and the share price collapse. Despit popular opinio here, it isn't some nasty conspiracy.

Can you give a measure of how the stock has collapsed? In the last year, last few months or so?
|
well the last month it is down very slightly, despite hype and despite the rumoured massive sell off of loss making assets. The reaction to some in the recent Sony financials thread was bewildering to say the last, possiobly because they listen to ethomaz who frankly doesnt understand financials. The numbers and the outlook were absolutely terrible.
the last 12 months up 20% (Nikkei is up 28%)
since Kaz Hirai took over it is down about 15% (and the above asset losses I mentioned have happened)
over 3 yrs it is down 50%
since its peak it is down 90%

Cool, thanks.
Personally I would want them to sell the TV division as a starter, that would at least make Sony appear less mighty. Even if it makes the company more profitable, in the eyes of gaming fans it would make the strong Sony brand appear slightly weaker.
In the long run, for the lulz I would like Sony to go bankrupt (and possibly Playstation division to be sold to some other player) and MS to sell off the Xbox division. That would be exciting and shift the current, historically tense, console war fanboy atmosphere to something else.
