Forums - Gaming - Shin’en talks Wii U RAM

Finally. A dev who is not lazy and actually tries to make Wii U games with good graphics. And no, it's not just slightly better than what the 360 can do.

I'd say wii u is 6 in this list.

Maybe not that much. Horsepower-wise, it's closer to PS360, which is why most games have remained around PS360-level, and obviously they haven't maxed out the power quite yet. Feature-wise however, it's closer to PS4/X1 (Open GL 4.X). I think it'll be the newer features that'll truly set it apart from PS360, not the raw power. Unfortunately, there just haven't been any developers who have taken their time and money to develop for the newer features, so the games so far haven't looked much more advanced.

The GPU is enough to render both the TV screen and the gamepad in 1080p 60 FPS without being optimized. This means the PS4 and XB1 are massive hardware overkill. Their biggest advantages over the Wii U isn't their power, but that no developer will ever have to optimize the game's code. My gut is that the PS4 and XB1 will see some horribly written code relying on the hardware's power to run it by brute force. Only third party developers with a gigantic reputation for optimizing to hardware will even bother.

Which basically means Square Enix and nobody else.

It's the old axiom "what Intel giveth, Microsoft taketh away" although in this case, Microsoft and Sony are doing the giving, and EA and Epic are doing the taking away.

The only question left on the table is if 2 GB of RAM is enough. We seem to have reasonably established the GPU and CPU are sufficient. Still, if the Wii U can manage with that meager GPU to run two screens at full power, chances are that 2 GB is also "enough."

I like this post. It reflects many things I 've been wondering about. :) But talking memory issues, remember when the 64 got the Memory Pack that produced so good visuals in, say, Star Wars Pod Racer (great game with awful AI)? As you said, the greater difference in the 3 consoles seems to be RAM. Is there any possibility Nintendo can upgrade the U's memory?

Maybe, but why upgrade hardware when a firmware update can do the same thing? With a system as low power as the Wii U, you don't necessarily need a RAM chip to pretend you have additional memory. Just convert 2 or 4 GB of the Wii U flash memory into SWAP and suddenly the Wii U has as much "RAM" as the XBox One. Especially if there's CPU power to spare and you can dedicate a whole core to flipping memory between memory pools, and this article implies there's more than enough for that.

If Nintendo really gets into a memory pickle, that's what they'll do.

Cool, never knew it could be done. How's that possible?

i think he means they can get Xbox360 level grafix at 1080p which sounds pretty good to me for a 32w console

So one of Wii U's key advantages seems to be that due to its more modern GPU feature set, it can do a lot of effects directly that the PS3/360 have to use workarounds to achieve. (Doing things directly is usually much more efficient)

Efficiency over raw power seems to be the name of the game with Wii U.

That's what should set it apart graphically, though it won't show significantly more in a way of polygon count. It's not exactly efficiency over raw power, because you'll still need some raw horsepower to use the newer features, but conisdering how developers in the past have praised the fact that the GPU is newer and it has features not possible on PS360, then I don't see why it shouldn't show better lighting, tessellation, and several graphical effects that otherwise would be a techincal burden on PS360 because they weren't designed to run those features. I recall Crytek mentioning that they were able to get some pseudo DX 11-like effects on PS360 with Crysis 3, but they were still in the development stage, and they wouldn't use them in the final game if they cost too much power to "fake" the effects. Attempting to create pseudo effects like that can actually use up more GPU power than being able to perform them naturally. Of course, we have yet to see any game use such effects on Wii U though because I doubt 3rd parties even bothered trying to impliment the newer effects considering how bad development tools were before launch. No they won't get Wii U graphics up to PS4X1 level or IQ, but they should have no problem passing PS360 if developers actually try, and unfortunately the sales are giving them a reason to not try.

So, they already know where wii U is?

lets say that ps360 = 0

Xone = 10

where is wii U? at 5?

ps30 - 0

wii u - 5

xone - 9

ps4 - 10

pc - +8000 over 9000

fixed

3DS-FC: 4511-1768-7903 (Mii-Name: Mnementh), Nintendo-Network-ID: Mnementh, Switch: SW-7706-3819-9381 (Mnementh)

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025

10 years greatest game event!

bets: [GTA6]

so basically hes saying they can achieve 360 levels with close to zero optimization
congrats Nintendo for creating a machine thats a heaven for lazy devs

This wonderful tech is called "paging". Given that PS4 and Xbone both have 500G disks, this is just brilliant. Oh wait, swapping is the hell for everything that computes... Especially with traditional hard-drives.
