Blaming Nvidia for upscaling is always going to be silly when the industry was going towards upscaling well before DLSS came to be. Sony's entire stick with the PS4 Pro was checkerboard rendering which was a form of upscaling. Unreal Engine 5's entire premise was being built around upscaling with TAA Upscaling being shipped with the engine. And the list goes on. Upscaling was going to be a thing with this generation regardless of DLSS or not because of the way that UE5 was being built.

What Nvidia did is build an upscaling tech far beyond what anyone else could do and it took the industry 5+ years to catch up and build upscaling tech similar to how good Nvidia's technology has been. Same with Frame Gen when you look at Radeons version that still hasn't fixed the frame pacing issues 2+ years after release. There will always be unoptimized games regardless of the kinds of tech that's available.

Nvidia may not have invented upscaling, but they were the ones that made ir popular, getting the blame. Just like Oblivion gets the blame for bringing DLCs to the market with that Horse Armor set, when it was a Total War game the first one to come up with the DLC concept.

But what Nvidia did create is the frame gen stuff that allows TellTale to sell a 15fps game as a 30fps one. So it's not like they're completely innocent here.

Nvidia created the tech yes but did they go and make TellTale optimize the game like garbage? Of course not. So blaming Nvidia because a developer is miss-using the technology is silly at best. That's like saying, I am going to blame Sony because Ubisoft made Tetris perform like garbage on the PS4:

Nvidia recommends to use frame gen when the game already does 40 or 60fps (it's in the HU video but I'm not going to watch it again for this), sp, why doesn't Nvidia lock the option down in such a way that it can only be enabled if the game already meets those minimim requirements that they establish?

Sure, it's Telltale's fault for using it "wrong", but if the option is there, they, as well as others, will use and abuse it. That's how things sadly work.

In the end, this is a "blame the gun or the gunner" situation, and the gunner is always the one to blame. But Nvidia is the one giving the guns without limiting what can be done with them.

I'll agree to disagree on that one. They could lock it down sure but they are providing the tools to developers to use the way they see fit. If they don't provide the tools, someone else will.. In this case, FSR and XeSS both have frame gen so why should Nvidia be the only one to lock theirs out?

Nvidia locks down the features they want, like deciding which cards can use a certain tech and which can't. And I'm talking among their own products, nor the ones from other vendors.

And it's not about Nvidia locking it down leaving AMD and Intel free to do whatever they want. They should also lock it down. Of course they should! But we all know that, thanks to its marketshare, Nvidia is the one that sets the trend with these things and that if they do it, the others will follow.

By the way, it's amazing how no one noticed or made a point about it but, those 30fps with FG in the min, requirements list a GTX 960. That card can't use DLSS nor FG. It's using either FSR or XeSS to achieve that, yet all the discussion has been around Nvidia.

It goes to show how much Nvidia and FG are interconnected and proves my point that all should lock this down, not just Nvidia.

HU is specifically singling out nVidia for them claiming frame generation is increasing performance and all their BS marketing around FG.

The third part of the gaming news isn’t as long as part two, but you may want to rest before jumping into it:

A gaming CEO just said 'We’ve been a little bit too romantic about the idea that we should have employees and give people long-term job security', and doesn't that sum up everything wrong with the industry right now
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/a-gaming-ceo-just-said-weve-been-a-little-bit-too-romantic-about-the-idea-that-we-should-have-employees-and-give-people-long-term-job-security-and-doesnt-that-sum-up-everything-wrong-with-the-industry-right-now/
>> It’s the CEO of the studio that made the Monument Valley games.

I can understand his feeling, considering he has a team of about 30 devs.

But considering that the Monument valley look like they were developed by a single developer or a team of less than 5 while at some point they were over 40 developers in the company, it begs the question about how they run their company more than anything else.

Yesn't.

While Sony did the checkerboarding on the PS4 consoles, keep in mind that consoles always need some help to keep up with PC in some ways. As such, they had a legitimate reason to use a technology to close the gap to PCs.

Also, the UE5 story is wrong. What was built in is a level of detail adjustment... but it's only for models and geometry (as in, the number of polygons in their meshes), and it's something that had been done since Doom3, but handcrafted at the time. Also, the UE5 was developed on the behest of SONY for their PS5, so it's clear they wanted some techniques that allow them to keep up after a couple years.

But where I will blame NVidia is that due to their marketing they make it appear as if DLSS and especially FG are silver bullets against low frame rates, and of course PR departments, unknowledgeable marketing people and AA/AAA studio CEOs will latch onto such wild and unfounded claims and use it as such in their games, resulting in the use of DLSS and FG to reach 30FPS, and for selling that idea for PC while all the other efforts were for consoles to be able to keep up with PC. It was to be expected from the moment that Jensen Huang made his infamous claims on stage, and I saw that coming from a mile away. In fact, I was expecting this to happen a bit sooner.

I had no idea what kitbashing was, but I guess I do now. I have some game dev ambitions, but if I ever want to get anything done, it's not going to involve high-fidelity 3D... Or probably Epic, if I can help it, with their lackluster store with its exclusives and all. Seems like insane value though. I've bought some bundles when Unity hadn't tried their nonsense, but those seem like they might be much better value.
