Hmm, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Dillon's Rolling Western, Pullblox - out of new ideas?
Is Nintendo even able or willing to surprise anymore? | |||

| Chrizum said: To clarify, I'm not talking about console innovations, about mature or gritty content or about unexpected things just for the element of surprise. I'm talking about the difference between Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Bros. About the difference between Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past "remake". |
as a die hard nintendo fan i feel the same way
i want to experience the same feeeling i had when i played OoT after being used to a link to the past and the nes games. sure is the same franchise but it was so different and not because of the 3d graphics.
the sad part creativity speaking is that nintendo can create different (millions!!) ways of gameplay but insted of attaching those gameplays to new characters and universes, they attach them to familiar franchises like mario to boost sales. Sure that works and they sell millions of copies and am the first sucker to buy those, but i want to see different faces...

The jaded curve is the problem. This is when it becomes harder and harder to surprise someone despite consistant changes. When you start expecting everything to have major innovations, the effect of smaller innovations have less impact. It then becomes harder and harder to feel surprised. Several surprises have already been listed and I could list many more. It should also be noted that we are exactly 5 months into the life of the Wii U and we've already seen many big surprises with assuredly many more to come. Hell, E3 hasn't even happened yet. It's not about Nintendo being willing and able to surprise, it's about us be willing and able to be surprised...or at least recognize them when we see them. |
This.
Outside of some indie devs, very few gaming companies have actually surprise me. I can't remember the last time a third party made a new ground breaking IP (I'm talking about AAA stuff). Portal is the only game that comes to mind atm. I'm not saying those 3rd party games are bad, they just don't surprise me anymore, they are almost the same with some few changes between installments .
I love Nintendo because even though they use their old IPs they still manage to make it new and fresh (with some exceptions like the NSMB series). Whether you liked the games or not, you can't say Skyward Sword is the same as Twilight Princess. Or that Mario Sunshine is the same as Galaxy. Or that Metroid Prime is the same as Other M. Or Paper Mario 1 and 2 with Super Paper Mario and Sticker Stars. Or the original Kid Icarus with Uprising. Or Donkey Kong Country 1,2 and 3 are the same as Donkey Kong Country Returns. Some Kirby games with Kirby's Epic Yarn.
Most people that bitch about Nintendo games being the same only look at the characters within the game, and they don't look at the differences in the gameplay.

Kid Icarus...how is this original?
Dillion's Rolling Western....how is that original or new? Guessing you haven't played Orcs Must Die?
Pullblox...another kid focused platformer. How un-Nintendo...
It's the same as ever with Nintendo. Japanese/kid-orientated games. The last Nintendo console that wasn't focused on such games was the N64, and yet to see something ground breaking from them. Where is their Gears of War, their Heavy Rain? SotC? DMC? They haven't done anything radical since SM:Galaxy.

kid icarus is awesome specially after not having a since the GB, Dillon is epic and a nice aproach to mixing rpg with TD and trust me if in the next smash game they include Dillon or Geno as a playable character i will buy 100 copies. i cant say anything about pushmo/pullblox i haven't played them yet but i know they are great.
what i think chrizum is talking about is usign all those great ideas in full 39.99 3ds games or 59.99 wii u games

Three wild guesses regarding the games - and three times totally wrong. You didn't play any of these games and have no idea what you're talking about. But thanks for joining the discussion.
And regarding Shadow of the Collossus: in a way Pandora's Tower is a lot like it. Don't know if Pandora's Tower is counted as first-party or second-party or whatever though.
But LOL at naming four games, that have three of them older than SM:Galaxy and then saying Nintendo had nothing new since Galaxy.
Of course they can, but I don't see why they'd want to.
Why experiment with new gameplay ideas and put them on new, untested IPs that may fail when you have versatile existing IPs that you can implement these new gameplay ideas into?

Wait a minute.. what?
He gave you Dillon's Rolling Western, which you dimiss as an Orcs Must Die clone. Then you turn around and ask where Nintendo's clones of other established franchises are. What exactly do you want from them? You do know that just because it doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean its not "new" to them.
| Chrizum said: With the announcement of the new 3DS Zelda and previously Animal Crossing, Zelda OoT 3D, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country, and many more, which are all practically remakes: what does this say about the direction Nintendo has taken? Just about every Nintendo game lately harkens back to the olden days. I know some people will love it but remember the N64? Nintendo was miles beyond any developer at that time, with games that were absolutely mindblowing, cutting edge and just perfect. Playing Nintendo games now feels like a trip down to memory lane. And it bores me to death. |
Animal Crossing New Leaf is *not* a remake. At all. It had a three year development cycle. Go read impressions from people who've played it.
3DS has had many original games as well as remakes. 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario, Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem were all brand new games.
DKCR 3D and OoT 3D are the only remakes for 3DS.
