Outside of some indie devs, very few gaming companies have actually surprise me. I can't remember the last time a third party made a new ground breaking IP (I'm talking about AAA stuff). Portal is the only game that comes to mind atm. I'm not saying those 3rd party games are bad, they just don't surprise me anymore, they are almost the same with some few changes between installments .
I love Nintendo because even though they use their old IPs they still manage to make it new and fresh (with some exceptions like the NSMB series). Whether you liked the games or not, you can't say Skyward Sword is the same as Twilight Princess. Or that Mario Sunshine is the same as Galaxy. Or that Metroid Prime is the same as Other M. Or Paper Mario 1 and 2 with Super Paper Mario and Sticker Stars. Or the original Kid Icarus with Uprising. Or Donkey Kong Country 1,2 and 3 are the same as Donkey Kong Country Returns. Some Kirby games with Kirby's Epic Yarn.
Most people that bitch about Nintendo games being the same only look at the characters within the game, and they don't look at the differences in the gameplay.
