| Viktor said: Actually it´s a very stupid question only a badly informed gamer can make to be honest with you. Just to name a few surprising announcements in the last two years. Obviously the deal for the Monster Hunter series on 3DS and later WiiU. Then Nintendo working with Platinum games on 2 games W101 and Bayonetta (an announcement that literary got some literary insane "they are stealing OUR games). |
I admit that my thread title was chosen poorly but I'm talking about the actual games developed by Nintendo. I don't feel surprised by them when playing them or when watching gameplay videos. This is not about announcements or business deals.

Are we talking about the same thing?
Nintendo surprises all the time. You never know what you are getting with a new game or a new system.
With existing ip's you never know what you are going to get. Even the basic game mechanics changed from Mario64 to Mario Sunshine to Mario Galaxy. Zelda ALttP2 is a shock because it's retro. Previous Zeldas on hendhelds have been toon graphics with touch controls or the recent 3D OoT. Now they switch to classic 2D style...but even that looks like it will be a new and fresh experience because of 3D imagery, and the ability to switch perspective and walk on walls. I have no idea what MarioU is going to be like, and I fully expect to be surprised.
With new IPs Nintendo gives outsanding first-time titles like Xenoblade, or all new experiences or even genres like WiiSports, or Brain Training, or Nintendogs.
In all honesty I see very little innovation or surprising in the industry outside of Nintendo, especailly at the 1st party level. MS, especially, just gives Halo 1,2,3,4.. Forza 1,2,3,4... which are essentailly improved versions of the same experience. Sony titles tend to end franchises and move on to new themes Jak-->Uncharted and so on, but as far as new genres or types of experiences there is little innovation, and from one game in the franchise to the next they are basically an improved version of the same experience.
The one knock on Nintendo is that they re-use characters in various games, but each game tends to be very different, and Nintendo tends to pioneer most new types of game experiences. I think a lot of people would like if they surprised or innovated less and would be happy without unique controls or watercolor graphics.

Hate? That is ridiculous. If this is hating then I don't think you know what hate is. Am I not allowd to express my concern about my favorite developer? And who says anything about Sony and Microsoft? I haven't even mentioned them and I won't as this thread is about Nintendo. What Sony and Microsoft do or don't is irrelevant (and a lot less interesting to me on top of it).

Lolwut. That makes no sense. So what about the day after E3? A week? A month? Where does your arbitrary limit lie exactly?
Anywaaaay, Nintendo seem to be out of ideas. They used a finite market to fling the wii into the stratosphere and were hoping to cultivate the same market again, which obviously wouldn't, and so far hasn't, worked. If they wanted to actually surprise people, they would have expanded their horizons beyond the same franchises they are milking so hard.

I guess i should have said Nintendo is criticised more than most companies. And many people do hate Nintendo, maybe not you exactly. I think Nintendo is totaly able to suprise everyone, have you forgotten about E3? Either Nintendo or some rumors ( i forget) said that they have some announcements that will shock everyone even more than Bayonetta 2, if thats some indication.
Pushmo/Crashmo, Xenoblade and, in a certain way, Kid Icarus Uprising are new Ips.

usually one thing in a nintendo direct surprises me such earlier this week with a link to the past 2 and back in january with xenoblade 2
Well, truth be told, the longer a gaming company is in business, the more the ratio of a old IP/new IP is going to swing in the direction of the old. That's just the way it is, especially for a company like Nintendo that hangs on to established characters and franchises. You can only have so many releases a year and you have to retain a higher number of existing IP or you'll make your more casual users unhappy. A great many customers really don't want to learn new controls very often and would rather have something they can quickly and comfortably slip into.
Still, I think it would be good for Nintendo to have a new series every once in awhile that people associate with a particular console cycle, which is close to what we see with Sony. However, as Nintendo management decides things like that, rather than the developers themselves as with studios like Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica, that will probably never happen.
