Forums - Gaming - Wii U external hard drive required to download Lego City Undercover, Nintendo says

LOL, that only one here gets the WiiU has no HDD, everyone else claims the WiiU has a too small harddrive.

And nothing new, we all knew, that the WiiU has a 32GB internal SSD and an option to add any USB-drive (that includes USB-sticks). So a non-news in this thread, a game this big had to come eventually.

not that big of a deal, but it still makes me wonder why nintendo didn't go for a bigger HDD space for the Wii U, some posters have poster external HDD with alot of space for cheap, and I'm pretty sure nintendo can for space like that for even cheaper.

They already sale the Wii U at a lost.......unless they sale 1.X games per console which so far has been 2.1 games or higher per console.

The Wii U doesn't have a hard drive. It uses flash memory which is expensive.

What!

It's actually not, they aren't using a high capacity high speed SSD, they are using low capacity low speed flash memory attached directly onto the motherboard. Think about how cheap 8/32GB SD cards and flash drives are already, then cheapen that even further for bulk direct purchases from the manufacturer. External hard drives are actually faster than the built in storage, and it helps explains the sluggish OS and long install times.

And your sources are?

The real question is, how many people have a decent enough bandwidth (or free traffic) to actually download 22GB of data within a reasonable time ?

The obvious sacrifice here was that Nintendo didn't want to lose form factor by having to cram an HDD in there, part of their drive to keep consoles as small and unobtrusive as possible.

Options are super-cheap, though. Nintendo should sell some, too.

I have to disagree with you here, a 2.5 inch bare drive could easily have been accommodated in the form factor of the Wii-U. I'd go with pricing over design constraints.

Not complaining though, it's not like Nintendo went with "blocks" this time so respect to them for the upfront 32GB/8GB options, and it does have a USB port and does support external storage, so what's the problem I say.

One bad point is that external drives are said to need a power source of their own, and the only way around that to use a 2.5 inch external is to use a Y-splitter cable as the USB ports only output 500ma, when externals need 900-1000ma.
