Not sure if someone else has said this yet, but you sound Agnostic.

That is also atheism. Atheism isn't the belief (as faith, as dogmatic truth), that no god exists. I think only a few people over the world are really believing that. Atheism at it's core is, not believing a god exists. Thats a difference. Atheism is the abscense of belief, not the belief of something doesn't exists. Most atheists will handily accept, if proper proof is shown a god existed all the time. But as long this proof doesn't exists, believing in god is for atheists the same as believing in werewolfes.

Agnostics are usually more open to the idea, that there might be some god. The difference is cloudy in my opinion. But putting the definition as you do, nearly all atheist are really agnostics (including Dawkins, if you read carefully what he writes).

This is true of people of faith in God or faith in lack of God.

You get atheism wrong. Atheism is the lack of faith in god, not the faith no god exists.

I never had a faith, I just wasn't raised to believe a certain religion.

I actually don't have trouble with religious people, I just never bring it up, and thankfully neither do they.

There have been a few exceptions; my brother's bitch of an ex once asked me if I believed my Dad was in heaven, and when I said I didn't believe in heaven she went on about me being horrible for not believing he was, and saying life would be pointless with heaven afterwards. I gave her a piece of my mind alright.

For a few years I was religious/spiritual, but it was never any organised religion, and even though I was religious, I never exactly believed.

I chose to act under the assumption that there was some benevolent force(s) that were looking out for me, and judging me, because at that stage of my life, I needed that. It's similar to scientific fields, where we take an assumption we know to be false/incomplete and use it to produce a good model/result.

It gave me someone to talk to without having to label myself crazy.

I stopped being religious when I reached the point where it was no longer necessary, I was happier, doing better and my life was right on track.

Some people need to understand what atheism is

Atheism/theism is completely different spectrum from agnostic/gnostic. Atheism and theism deals with what a person believes. Agnosticism deals with what a person knows (or at least what s/he think he knows). If you believe in God, then you are a theist. If you don't, then you are an atheist (which doesn't necessarily mean you believe God doesn't exist). If you believe you know whether God exist or doesn't exist, then you are gnostic. If you believe it's impossible to know, then you are agnostic.

Agnosticism isn't some middle ground be atheism and theism. Agnosticism is compatible with both atheism and theism. With that said, there are four categories that a person can fall into:

  • Gnostic Theist - A person who thinks there is enough information to know that at least one deity exists.
  • Agnostic Theist - A person who believes that at least one deity exists, but accepts that thre isn't enough information to know.
  • Agnostic Atheist - A person who does not believe in a deity, but accepts that there isn't enough information to know.
  • Explicit Atheist - A person who believes in the inexistance of a deity, but accepts that there isn't enough information to know.
  • Gnostic Atheist - A person who thinks there is enough information to know that no deity exists (This group is composed solely of explicit atheists).

There's two types of atheists. One, those who explicitly assert that no deity exist. And then there's everyone else, those who simply do not believe in a God.

To describe all atheists, the only definition acceptable is "those who lack a belief in a deity". Once you start referring to people who explicitly believe in the lack of a deity, then you're talking about a specific group of atheists who DO NOT represent all atheists.

Excellent explanation of the differences in the terms. I should have get myself to reading it up on Wikipedia, but I was too lazy. Thanks for this great posts, it makes a it a lot better to understand, what we are discussing about.

Hey i became an athiest about a year ago and have been reflecting on how my life has changed since I finally could no longer justify beleving in god. I no longer feel the need to attend church nor do I try to defend my past faith (christianity). But i have on the other hand come into friction on occasion with other member's of my family and to a lesser extent friend's.

My question to the athiest member's of vgchartz is if you had a faith why did you leave it and how has your life changed since becoming an athiest?

Please no trolling

PS: I do not claim their is not god but rather i will only believe the existence of a god with proof of which I see none.

I only beleive in things i can see.

TO ALL YOU LOGICAL PEOPLE OUT THERE TELL ME WHY NOT BELIEVE IN GOD ?

If he exists and you dont believe in him you go to hell but if you believe you go to heaven..there is nothing you can lose..so why not ? and if he doesnt exist then he doesnt exist you wont ruin your life or anything like that..thats simple logic and everyone should agree IMO.

If god(s) will punish people only for disbelieving in him/her/them, while he/she/them also shows no proof of the existance, that would not be agood religion. I would avoid believing that only because I think it is not right.

Maybe you've lost the point of religion. Any religious belief ultimately boils down to a leap of faith. And yes, I've had the displeasure of talking to individuals so smug in their beliefs that they "know" for a fact their god is real and in this respect, they are just as annoying and aggravating as those who know for a fact that there is no god when the objective reality is no one can truthfully say they know one way or the other.

But if one needs "proof" to believe, then faith is something that is simply beyond their capability.

Even if one had a personal, non drug/alchohol/severe head trauma related encounter with something claiming to be The god with a demonstration of creating a world or dimension or universe with a thought and then destroying it with another, the non-believer is still going to say it's an illusion, it's faulty perception, a dream or you may be a god, but not The god.

And on the other end of the spectrum, someone will see the face of Jesus in a stain in the toilet and suddenly it's a life and faith affirming miracle that proves they've been personally touched by god and objective proof that god exists.

But if one feels obligated to justify and defend their belief in some sort of higher power responsible for the creation and governing of everything, that's something of a personal limitation as well.

Ultimately it's a choice.

I it always a choice if one believe's in a god or particular god? I myself have done my best to have an open mind to the existence of god but have yet to find sufficient evidence for me to believe this claim. I cannot simply decide to believe that their is a god no more than i can believe the earth revolves around the sun untill i see evidence otherwise.

What people do have a choice in is listening to other people's argument's from the other side and defend thier belief's. If some people try hard enough they can convince themselves of allmost anything.

If god is anything like what is depicted in the bible and/or the qur'an or most religion, I rather take my chances as an atheist since I find the Abrahamic god to be very, very cruel and the most evil thing there ever was.

? are you sayin he will punish you no matter what ?

I'm saying it's not worth following the religion of the Abrahamic god since that's one evil being. He gives man free will to make of the world what he can, so when men don't believe in god (because of the free will god gave men) god decides to flood the world, killing everything in it - except for Noah and the animals he could gather. Is that a just god? That's like as if a parent would give their kid a toy, and as soon as the kid starts to play with the toy the parent would start hitting the child. Is that not evil and psycopathic?

I used to be Muslim. As a kid, I would just do as I was told and never really think about it. Even though a lot of it often seemed arbitrary, and sometimes even ridiculous. I don't remember a specific moment when I decided I was atheist. It just happened over time as I learned to think for myself. I noticed how irrational, contradictory, and plain silly the stuff they believed was.

Anyways, my life hasn't changed much, except I stopped doing some stuff. I stopped going to weekly prayers, my dad was too cool to act like it bothered him haha. My mom tried to persuade me to go back, but I didn't, and they kind of forgot about it. I guess they figured I'd come around eventually. I was lucky to have such nice parents. I know a friend whose dad forced him to pray as a kid.

I've actually never talked with an atheistic muslim... I'm quite curious; what did turn you off in Islam? Being born and raised in a christian country, I know what puts ME off in Christendom, as well as what puts my friends off in it - but I've never heard what turns a muslim atheist...
