I've actually never talked with an atheistic muslim... I'm quite curious; what did turn you off in Islam? Being born and raised in a christian country, I know what puts ME off in Christendom, as well as what puts my friends off in it - but I've never heard what turns a muslim atheist...

It's just the same BS, plus some other stuff. It just couldn't possibly have come from a divine and perfect being. Women are forced to cover themselves from head to toe, so that men aren't temped by them (how ridiculous is that -_-U). Some of the stuff is obviously written by men, like the 70 vigin women thing lol. Besides all the stuff in common, like prayer is supposed to work but doesn't, and a lot of the logical fallacies and contradictions. It isn't that different than either Christianity or Judaism. All three are based around the same ideas and mythology (theology? not sure if that's the correct word to use here).

You probably haven't heard of many muslim atheists because:
A) You live in a mostly Christian country.
B) The penalty for apostasy is death x_x (Probably not nowadays, but that just shows you how ridiculous this rule is).
C) Islam is mostly dominant in developing countries. APM summed it up pretty well.

sorry if it's been discussed here or given the name for it, kinda don't even wanna read through this :D but what is the term given to someone who just doesn't give a rats about religion at all? like zero interest one way or the other about any of it?

Yeah, it sounds like the same BS with every other religion ^^

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

It's been jokingly referred to as "apatheism" :)

See one of its proponents here.

3) moral grounds

Even if you could force yourself to believe something or if you decided to act according to a given moral rule because you weighted the pros and cons of Pascal's wager, it would be an amoral choice, stemming uniquely from a logical pursuit of maximum satisfaction. A judeo-christian god, being the ultimate moral compass, would find such behavior hypocritical and devoid of real ethical meaning.

That's interesting, but I think this example is  useful to explain what is faith.

(btw. I'm not a religious person but I've studied, for some reasons long to explain, a bit of christian theology).

Since the ultimate message of Jesus life, and in the end the ultimate message of christianity is to donate everything you possess and yourself to others (donate even your life), considering the matter of donating your life from the Pascal's wager point of view wouldn't even make sense if you don't firmly believe in the existence of god and in the existence of something beyond life (you wouldn't have any pros). Then if you belive in god so firmly to be ready to give up on everything, it means you must consider its message ethical. If you're believing in god because you are scared of it, it means you are just trying to protect yourself and your integrity from god, any person in this situation won't be reasonably willing to give up on everything, including life.

I'm not sure I understood you entirely, but Pascal's wager has nothing to say about the morality of this particular choice (see e.g. wikipedia for the literal quoting out of the pensees: it really _is_ explicitely postulated in game theory terms).

I find that despicable in terms of my secular, humanistic morality; absurd and contradictory in terms of a religious and supernatural one. I guess it all goes back to Abraham's test and the trouble of defining good, but I don't have enough doublethinking circuitry in my brain to follow believers down that rabbit hole :)

Around the Network

Well, I grew up in Austria, where most people are roman catholics. I grew up with religion, but I never really believed the teachings. I only went to church if we had to at school. It was kind of funny hearing the stories of the bible, like Adam and Eva, and then you hear about the evolution in the next hour in another class.

I always got the impression, that religion is a thing that everyone in my vicinity pretends to believe although they were not truly believing. It always felt like giving the impression of being religous so that the neighbours can't rant about you.

So I never really took these stories serious and I live happily without believing in god(s). The one thing I always feared about religion is that religious organisations often act like totalitarian regimes. How religious parties are trying to influence the laws, the everyday life of people, etc.

It is funny that in the city religion is no longer important. Most of my friends withdraw from the church because they do not want to pay 1,6% "tax" to the church. Only our grandparents were uneasy with our decision, but they grew up in an age where you were practically an outcast if you were not a member of the church.

In the country, people are more religious. My wifes father was very angry and disappointed when she left the church. He feared that his reputation might suffer... I am curious how he will react when we will have children and refuse to christen them. It is funny, you get the impression that other peoples talk or more important than your relationship with your own daughter.

Hmm, since we are on a VG site, I can recommend the game "Final Fantasy X". It tells a great story about the consequences of blind faith.

i was a protestant as a kid.. i was told how it was by my parents and because i was a child i didnt question it. i guess it was also comforting to know that relatives who died were in a "better place" rather than bleak emptiness. i believed but didnt make my choices with religious laws in mind. as i grew older i became exposed to the stories you hear of religious extremists doing humanitarian crimes in the name of the almighty and all loving god (witch hunt, child molesting etc.).. i also began to question why i should believe and devote my thoughts to something that doesnt show itself. i came to this ultimate conclusion that i have lived by ever since:

if god knows all, then why doesnt he intervene and help suffering?. maybe it could be because he cant do anything, but then he wouldnt be all powerfull. this would contradict most of the bible stories directly which means the book is a lie. if it turns out that he is indeed all powerfull, then he either hates people or dont care. so why should i worship or care about him? if god do exist then he has abandoned us. we should all abandon him. humanity has so much potential but it is being supressed by some people feeling the need to cling to an either nonexistant or hatefull creator.

that is why i dont believe. it is also why i directly combat any religion because humanity can only depend on itself, but it slows progress when we have to step carefully to not insult the savages. religions free pass have to end. either contribute with something factual or die off.

Like dyremose above, I grew up as a CofE and that is what I knew because I was a kid so didn't question it. Later in life I didn't question it however, I just grew without it affecting me because of this and my education I came to the understanding that religion holds no great basis on my life and so while I never stopped believing, I never really believed either. I however do not regret my upbringing, it taught me moral guidance and without it I might not be the person I am today with the same moral standings.

Although more recently, I'd say I'd swing more to not believing at all in a higher being due to the suffering of a loved ones. I could not see a reason why he'd allow 2 people so special to suffer so much. This even caused by best friend who is LDS to question his faith, I never once questioned his faith as it was his right to believe it and not for me to question it but 'God' did that to him. Oddly I reassured him though, not of his faith but of his character.

Hmm, pie.

We never talked about religion in my family.

When I was eight years old, I was asked "what I believe in", I didn't know what to answer, so I said "science".

I LOVE ICELAND!

I thank you for the link but didn't realize it was a video, I'm afraid I wouldn't even go so far as to watch someone talk about non religion that is my level of disinterest in the whole thing, I think watching Penn from Penn and Teller talking about religion was about as much as I'd ever do just because I like the guy and it came up with that twat who used to be under Simon Cowell in the UK was grilling him in an interview over his views, I think the best paraphrasing I could give from it was when asked if he feared death he asked if the Interviewer feared his existence in the 1800s before he was born, because as Penn went on he said the world was the same then as it will be without you when you're dead and you will care just as much after you've died as you did in 1800 when you also weren't alive.

But yeah just kinda wanted a word for it because using the term Atheist seems to mean you want to talk about you believing why the big cloud in the sky doesn't have a man with a beard on it, where I want to use the term which means "Don't talk to me about clouds unless it is about to rain" but nicely :D
