Well, I grew up in Austria, where most people are roman catholics. I grew up with religion, but I never really believed the teachings. I only went to church if we had to at school. It was kind of funny hearing the stories of the bible, like Adam and Eva, and then you hear about the evolution in the next hour in another class.
I always got the impression, that religion is a thing that everyone in my vicinity pretends to believe although they were not truly believing. It always felt like giving the impression of being religous so that the neighbours can't rant about you.
So I never really took these stories serious and I live happily without believing in god(s). The one thing I always feared about religion is that religious organisations often act like totalitarian regimes. How religious parties are trying to influence the laws, the everyday life of people, etc.
It is funny that in the city religion is no longer important. Most of my friends withdraw from the church because they do not want to pay 1,6% "tax" to the church. Only our grandparents were uneasy with our decision, but they grew up in an age where you were practically an outcast if you were not a member of the church.
In the country, people are more religious. My wifes father was very angry and disappointed when she left the church. He feared that his reputation might suffer... I am curious how he will react when we will have children and refuse to christen them. It is funny, you get the impression that other peoples talk or more important than your relationship with your own daughter.
Hmm, since we are on a VG site, I can recommend the game "Final Fantasy X". It tells a great story about the consequences of blind faith.
