i was a protestant as a kid.. i was told how it was by my parents and because i was a child i didnt question it. i guess it was also comforting to know that relatives who died were in a "better place" rather than bleak emptiness. i believed but didnt make my choices with religious laws in mind. as i grew older i became exposed to the stories you hear of religious extremists doing humanitarian crimes in the name of the almighty and all loving god (witch hunt, child molesting etc.).. i also began to question why i should believe and devote my thoughts to something that doesnt show itself. i came to this ultimate conclusion that i have lived by ever since:

if god knows all, then why doesnt he intervene and help suffering?. maybe it could be because he cant do anything, but then he wouldnt be all powerfull. this would contradict most of the bible stories directly which means the book is a lie. if it turns out that he is indeed all powerfull, then he either hates people or dont care. so why should i worship or care about him? if god do exist then he has abandoned us. we should all abandon him. humanity has so much potential but it is being supressed by some people feeling the need to cling to an either nonexistant or hatefull creator.

that is why i dont believe. it is also why i directly combat any religion because humanity can only depend on itself, but it slows progress when we have to step carefully to not insult the savages. religions free pass have to end. either contribute with something factual or die off.
