For a few years I was religious/spiritual, but it was never any organised religion, and even though I was religious, I never exactly believed.

I chose to act under the assumption that there was some benevolent force(s) that were looking out for me, and judging me, because at that stage of my life, I needed that. It's similar to scientific fields, where we take an assumption we know to be false/incomplete and use it to produce a good model/result.

It gave me someone to talk to without having to label myself crazy.

I stopped being religious when I reached the point where it was no longer necessary, I was happier, doing better and my life was right on track.
