Forums - Sony - Japanese newspaper claims PS4 will cost over 40,000 yen, releasing this year

Asahi, a well-known newspaper in Japan, is reporting that the next PlayStation will cost more than 40,000 yen. The publication also adds to previous speculation that the console will be made available this year in North America and Japan.

40,000 yen may not mean much to consumers overseas. Converting between currencies, that would be about $428 in USD and roughly 317 Euros.

Two things to keep in mind: 1) Asahi says Sony’s new home console will cost more than 40,000 yen and 2) prices tend to see adjustments in different territories rather than straight conversions.

And of course, Asahi’s report should only be treated as speculation for now.

$450 to $500 sounds about right, but the source links doesn't have any more information and the original website is in moonshines so I have no way to know where this is coming from other than some guy that sames so guy says so. This is a rumor of a rumor.

How much Yen does the Wii U cost?

So $450 to $499

No more $599 price tag! XD

"Over $450" includes... $599!

that means PS4 will have some of the same problems PS3 had. i'll buy when it's $299 at the most.

Boom

Well considering the PS3 launched at around 58000 Yen, 40k doesn't sound so bad especially when factoring in inflation.

This equates to a US price point of $400-$450... $399 would be perfect

It will be cheaper in the US than in Japan so $400. Later in Europe 300-350 Euros, maybe

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Expecting $399 in the US, maybe $450 for some other bundle/set/memory version, but not sure. After what happened with the PS3 (and Vita), I can't imagine Sony having the balls to release yet another console deemed "too expensive" by the public. PS3 was technically worth the price at launch ($600), but consumers are the ones who decide what's too expensive and what's "just right". You can't overshoot the market.

So, I won't be surprised if Sony finds a way to make it $350, which would be trouble for Nintendo. They'll be forced to price cut Wii U like they did with 3DS, most likely.
