Forums - Nintendo - Wii U surprises and disappointments

Addicted to M&B: Napoleonic Wars and sort of still addicted to Minecraft so I haven't had time to find out about all of Nintendo's wrongdoings yet but here goes:

Surprises:

- Controller is quite nice. It's very light and comfortable and I like the second screen.

- Miiverse is cool. It's like an overly happy sect. Everyone is nice and I love (most of) the fanart that members produce.

Disappointments:

- Not much to buy at the moment. Games are coming but most of 2013 will be pretty bleh.

- Load times. There are oopses and there are OOPSes and then you have major fudge up's and then you have the Wii U OS...What the hell!?

o.O. Are you sure the gamepad isn't faulty? I also have no connection in the next room, but 2m sounds a bit extreme. Do you know anyone else with a WiiU? If so, test your gamepad there to make sure it's actually the gamepad's fault.

Sadly, I don't. I really did try everything to get it working. I resynced, of course. I moved the whole system upstairs. I disconnected the Wii U power and the gamepad battery for 15 minutes. I disabled my household's 5GHz wifi.

The idea it might be faulty certainly occurred to me. It was wacky for about three hours, but then snapped back into action and has been reliable anywhere in the same room ever since. Wish I knew what the problem was, but I'm happy as long as it never shows up again.

Sucks. Especially since you can't just send in your gamepad as that would render the WiiU useless for at least 2 weeks -_-

The gamepad is meant to be used with the touch pen, it works flawlessly.

Using the stylus for a minigame like the Yoshi one in Nintendoland makes perfect sense.

The idea that I'm supposed to pull out the stylus whenever I want to use the touchscreen in a game like Batman or ZombiU is just plain silly. If the touchscreen is meant only to be used with the stylus, it renders it useless as an input device for any game that uses thumbsticks and buttons. Which I suspect means the vast majority of Wii U games.

Touchscreen works flawlessly in ZombiU without stylus, it seems to be more of a gamedesign problem.

I was surprised in how well internet could be used as a group. Let down that they didn't go with Skype for the video conf. app, sure its Microsoft but at least it is much more useful.

Wii transfer is dodgy.

Wiimote is second class.

Didn't do the transfer when I got the WiiU due to lack of VC/WW info. But I still needed my Miis, and the Wii transfer is all or nothing. I tried looking for ways to transfer the Miis to WiiU. The Mii app gave 3DS and vWii options, I have no 3DS so vWii it is. Go to my Wii, transfer a few Miis to the Wiimote and when I try transfer them to the vWii, there is no option. The emulated Wii is stripped-down in some fronts... In the end, I had the Wii running in the TV editing the Miis, and creating them from scratch with the Gamepad.

I use only my fingers in ZombiU, never the stylus, and it works well.

That said, I agree with most of your points. Obviously I have no radio enthusiast, so my experience with the reach of the gamepad is better. I can even use it on the balcony, that will be very cool in the summer. MIiverse was also a positive surprise for me. Wii-emulation was also a bad surprise for me. The Wii-mode feels completely separated. It is like you powering up your WiiU - and then the Wii inside the U. That's why I keep using my Wii for Wii-games. That works a lot better with DS-games on 3DS. And I dislike, that they made the Wiimote a secondary controller. Can you use the menu without a gamepad at all? I should try that.

The surprise is that it disappoints...

I really smudged up the screen from the hacking in Arkham City, swiping my finger back and forth

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

i bought an 8 gig white basic, i would have expected around 6 gig storage but NO, due to a large update i have 2.9 gig left, and with news on 2 further updates coming our way that storage will dwindle.

and please dont say you should have got the 32 gig, i feel this is criminal and unfair

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I have to say that the internet browser on WiiU is top notch, better and faster than my laptop and PS3. In fact 90% of my browsing is now via WiiU. I havent got too many issues i think its great, i know the load times can be a bit slow, but i figured that sometime an update would fix that, and hey presto its happening. Ive noticed a lot of the software is getting updates as well, i had one for Tekken and it sped up the load times so they are bareley noticable.
One thing to point out, is that both PS3 and 360 were a shadow of what they are today, They have had lots of features and improvements over the years with updates and patches, I see the same with WiiU..its a work in progress.
