Forums - Nintendo - Wii U surprises and disappointments

I agree that throwing the WiiMote in there seemed like some after-thought. I always thought it was ridiculous for Nintendo to try to get us using the WiiMote again this generation when they already have a new controller, one that is pretty interesting to use. Maybe Nintendo's new flagship will be the WiiMote? Hopefully not...

Sorry if off-topic, but my disappointment with Wii U is a lack of account system. I'm really worried about how the transfer works so maybe someone can clarify me some things:

1. If I have all my Wii VC games on an SD card and I get an empty SD card and do the transfer thing... it will copy just the Wii Shop info, save files and other stuff, but not the games right? So I'll be able to download all my Wii VC games in the Wii U, and still play the Wii VC games installed on the first SD card?

2. Are the save files also erased when I do the transfer? Or is it possible to have save files on both systems?

3. Is it possible to do the transfer multiple times? For example today I just move a game, tomorrow another game, etc?

You can transfer everything from your Wii, including the Wii games you downloaded from the Wii Shop. Saved files will also be transfered. This is a one time transfer and it will be erased completly from your Wii. One time and no more, everything will be transfer. You cannot choose what files to transfer. Once they are on the Wii mode of the Wii U, you can download them to be played on Wii U mode if you pay $1.00 and $1.50 (for NES and SNES titles, respectively) on the Wii U eshop when they become available. Price will be displayed automatically only if you have them on the Wii mode of the Wii U.

I am guessing that you don't have the system, why are you asking? see people don't know what is the problem they have because they don't like to read the manual instructions. everything I am telling you is in the instructions except the virtual console thing when they become available on the Wii U eshop.

Thanks for the answer, and no, I don't have the Wii U yet, I'm interested but there are things I don't like, like this for example, the way they did all the transfer thing instead of account system.

So, if I understand correctly from what you're saying, I may have all my save files and games on an SD card on the Wii. But once I do the transfer, even using ANOTHER  SD card, the one with all the stuff will be blocked and completely useless?  O_o

Edit: I mean, useless in the old Wii... you see, I'm looking if it's possible to have your games on both systems at the same time

Wii-emulation was also a bad surprise for me. The Wii-mode feels completely separated. It is like you powering up your WiiU - and then the Wii inside the U. That's why I keep using my Wii for Wii-games. That works a lot better with DS-games on 3DS. And I dislike, that they made the Wiimote a secondary controller. Can you use the menu without a gamepad at all? I should try that.

I also missed a better integrated BC. When you pop in a Wii disc it should boot it up directly instead of going to the Wii menu (or checking for a Wiimote), and there should have been a day one option to make VC/WW shortcuts on the WiiU OS... Most likely do my transfer if they ever fix it up. I see this as a bigger problem than the OS speed everyone complains about.

Transfer means to move from one place to another. It doesn't say copy but transfer. They move your Wii's drm, save files and Miis. There was no uniform account system for all Wii owners (some did have their purchases linked to their Club Nintendo), so they use this method.

I didn't want to move all my content to Wii U just yet, only some save files and Miis, had to do it manually by creating the Miis and passing the save files one by one (having runned the games beforehand, seems to be a requirement).

I have to say that the internet browser on WiiU is top notch, better and faster than my laptop and PS3. In fact 90% of my browsing is now via WiiU. I havent got too many issues i think its great, i know the load times can be a bit slow, but i figured that sometime an update would fix that, and hey presto its happening. Ive noticed a lot of the software is getting updates as well, i had one for Tekken and it sped up the load times so they are bareley noticable.
One thing to point out, is that both PS3 and 360 were a shadow of what they are today, They have had lots of features and improvements over the years with updates and patches, I see the same with WiiU..its a work in progress.

I'm kind of surprised to see people (not just yourself) comparing Wii U's browser favorably to a computer.  I agree that it's awesome for a console browser — full fledged WebKit engine, dual screen YouTube — but I can't imagine it ever being my first choice.  I'm not surprised it runs circles around PS3's POS browser, but I'm really curious what kind of laptop you are using that's slower than the Wii U browser?  An iPad, even an old one with a much slower processor, feels more fluid and is far, far better for typing.

My Wii U seems fairly noisy when reading discs, but I am sitting closer to it than I used to with the Wii, so it's hard to say for sure.  Miiverse is great, can't wait to access it from more places.  And the people doing 1:1 pixel art on it are just amazing (sadly, this will become a lot more ordinary once web browsers can post to Miiverse).

My laptop is a Compaq ( not sure what model), which i bought in 2009. I t used to be rapid, but of late has become a little sluggish. Perhaps i need to get an IT guy at work to look at it for me :(

Anyways, i agree that Miiverse is a great community that has potential galore. I think it may become one of the WiiU selling points sometime in the future.

I was planning on waiting until E3 anyway to decide on if I want Wii U, Orbis, or Durango but honestly even if I was already sold on Wii U, I wouldn't buy one yet.

Wii U seems to have many issues. They are all fixable but as of now, Wii U is kind of like a broken system. I think this is another reason why Wii U sales are so low. Even if people like the current games released, they are still hesitant to buy one because of all the problems.

Wii U officially launches Holiday 2013! The people who bought it already are just the test rats...

lmfao..?  you've just admitted that you don't even own the system and your saying it has issues. I haven't encountered ANY issues at all with my Wii U as long as many other people I know online and in real life. No bricking, no freezing for me. The only real thing is loading times and even that I dont mind, but a lot of people are complaining. Wii U is far from broken, just needs some new software improvements for loading times and the addition of cross game chat. Plus, waiting for the software to be released, which as we found out last week is being worked on.

I'm not denying there are problems with the Wii U, but calling it a broken system is a bit ridiculous.

Well obviously I can't judge the system from experience but everyone seems to be having the same problems with it from what I read. Can you trust everything you read online? No, but when people complain about the same things all the time, it becomes obvious which issues need to be addressed. I didn't mean literally broken but has problems that shouldn't have been there IMO. It was to be expected that everything wouldn't be ready with zero issues at launch but the problems it has are a bit ridiculous. As I said, Nintendo is working on them and they will be fixed but it feels as if the Wii U was rushed out because of declining Wii sales. By Holiday 2013 all or at least most of the main complaints should be fixed. PS3 & 360 were the same way. Orbis & Durango will likely face issues at launch as well. I wasn't trying to rip on Wii U, I was just stating that it seems to have many issues that will get fixed later...
