Forums - Nintendo - Wii owners, is it our fault that the Wii U isn't getting better third party support?

We almost had it, too. If someone had just manned up and bought one more copy of Dead Space Extraction, we'd be rolling in third party support.

Too bad, so sad.

I was right there man, I had it in my hand. Then the light reflected off some guys glasses and hit a copy of NSMB. It was like it was calling to me. Before I knew it, I walked out of the store with NSMB, leaving Dead Space Extraction behind.

Wii U third party support is as good as it has been on a Nintendo home console since the SNES era.

The big problem is not third party support, it is first and second party support. Not really any triple A titles available, and none have been announced either. The closest thing we have is a 2D Mario game, a brand tarnished very recently with a very repetetive 3DS iteration just months before. Bring 3D Mario, which is synonymous with excellence since it was released in Galaxy form and topped the all time highest rated games chart, a Mario Kart game which has been excellent since the GC and GBA monstrosities, the Zelda game with a new BIG direction that we have been waiting for since Majora's Mask on N64, or a major label RPG developed in-house by Nintendo: Xenogears co-produced with Square and developed by Monolith, or give us ANOTHER EARTHBOUND, even a finally completed Earthbound 64 would do. Something big, something bad (in that 1980's kind of way, where bad means awesome), and something that WILL turn the heads of the millions and millions of traditional gaming fans all around the world. Nintendo is capable of developing a game which will make the entire third party industry look mediocre in comparison, that's the game we're looking for, another Super Mario Bros. 3, Donkey Kong Coutry, Ocarina of Time, or Mario Galaxy.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Really? One exclusive and a bunch of ports?

No one is talking about the wii-u being the lead platform for the next set of consoles, because Nintendo decided they were going to put only a similar hardware level to the current Ps3/Xbox consoles. They will be working like they normally do, with the intention of releasing the games on PS4/Xbox720 and PC, If there are PS3/Xbox duel releases then the wii-u might get them, but Nintendo have waited too long to release the Wii-U and it being underpowered means that it will get left behind by 3rd parties again.

Can you absolutely 100 % garuntee that though? When you release a new console things start over. This is what the majority say and the majority have been proven wrong four times in a row. In fact everything the majority said the exact opposite happened.

That theory is throwing around the same theory that was being thrown around last time. Its just being twisted because of what happened now. I remember when people were saying 360 would become irrelevant and lose third party support the second ps3 comes out. This time its when the others come out. You are only adding xbox into the theory now because it proved successful.

Wii u will suffer from the lack of power in some ways but it won't be on the scale it was with wii. Its too expensive.

For me, it's pretty simple - even if I am remotely interested in a third party game for a Nintendo console, there's always at least three first party games that I see as a 'must have'. So my money (and time) goes on those games instead. The reason I love my PS3 so much is that I don't have the Nintendo first party option, which has helped me broaden my video game horizon and enjoy experiences I wouldn't have if I'd just stuck to my Wii. Nintendo first party games IMO are just that good.

But that's just not... logical! Wouldn't that mean that when you're deciding between a Nintendo game and a Sony game, you automatically choose the Nintendo option? Even if it's for two different systems?

Idk if its logical or not. But it's the truth. And I have 14 PS3 games in a year. So, idk.

No one can be absolutely sure... but I feel pretty confident....maybe 99.9% sure that the Wii-U will not be the lead platform for any major 3rd party game :)

Think about it for a moment, three devices will be technically closer together and easier to develop for, the PS4/Xbox720 and the PC. If one of those is choosen as the lead platform, say due to sales, then it is easier to convert to the other two, while they will have to downscale and downsize to the wii-u (not an easy feat trying to make a game run at a good FPS on a machine with less grunt).

To be honest, you can mention what some fanboys said about the Xbox being crushed by the PS3 when it was released, but technically from a power point of view its similar in performance terms to the PS3. Did any major game that came out on the PS3/Xbox/Wii have the Wii as the lead platform.. I cant think of any can you (let's not say some dance game please :).

Lets look at it from the other direction, gaming engines...  many of the major engines have suggested their next gen engines *could* run on the wii-u, but won't for business reasons or they have no plans... I think this is makes it quite clear what the major players are thinking.

I think WiiU 3rd party support has been good so far, why people pointing to them being just a load of ports is childish. Arkham City, Darksiders, BLOPS 2 ,Mass Effect 3 etc are all top games regardless of them being ports.
Funny how people downgrade them when they appear on a Nintendo system, bare in mind that a lot of WiiU owners may not have experienced these great games before.
Arkham City as a launch game??? sound good to me.

Tales of graces. Just never got localized on wii :( When move launched there were also many up ports to ps3.

Anyway I am sure some of them will cop out but it won't be as many as last time. I'm garunteed to enjoy my new system because its going to have some good japanese support. That much I'm sure of. Its just region locked and that will make things annoying for me. Bethesda I don't care about anyway but for those that do then I hope they change their minds.

This is what is realisitically going to happen. The theory that the others come out and nintendo will completely lose third party support is likely (but again not garunteed) to be wrong. They have completely revamped their tactics to third parties now. Sure they get less sales on nintendo but to even things out they are paying higher royalties. And then they are letting people patch for free. Microsoft and sony charge. Which would people patch for if given the offer? It will all depend on how it evens out in the end.

They would be taking a massive risk by developing for those systems without knowing how well they will do. According to epic and bioware dev costs are set to sky rocket at the start of this gen and I'm fairly certain neither system will be able to sell a game for 20 - 30 million units on release. Besides that you have to factor how similar the systems are. People are certain wii u will tank when the others surface but microsoft and sony are after the exact same 'hardcore' market and both (having systems so similar to each other) will have trouble convincing people to upgrade to their side. If they keep the consoles that similar its only a matter of time before one of them caves.

Really guys? Isn't this a little early to be taking about this? Let's wait until E3 and see what's announced for the rest of the year.

Its Obama's fault.
