Forums - Sales - PS3 to be the second most popular home console EVER?

10m is the lowest it could go if you're being pesismistic.
11m being optimistic.

I think 11m is very possible with all the great games releasing this year including games like GTA V + a possible price cut and maybe even the 12gig PS3 model being released in the US.

I doubt any new software for the PS3 will spike the sales up.

EDIT: Ninja'd.

No chance.

You people seem to think that the PS3 will have the same post-gen legs as the PS2 did, which is ludicrous. The only reason the PS2's legs were so good is because it was enormously popular and it made financial sense for Sony to continue to support it after the next-gen had started. Times have changed since then. The PS3 is nowhere near the popularity of the PS2 and its post-gen legs will be significantly shorter.

Id love to see sonys consoles in 1st 2nd and 3rd :)

The answer to the question is either yes no or maybe and before you accuse me of sitting on the fence , I choose maybe .

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

After a console falls after its peak, its subsequent falls are considerably more harsh. And YoY falls are even more severe the year its successor releases.

The PS3 fell 16% in 2012. That being said, we should expect the PS3 to fall considerably more than 16% this year. That means the PS3 should sell considerably less than 10m this year. And this is without considering the effect the PS4 release will have.

Please explain to me how 10m is pessimistic. A 10m prediction would have the PS3 fall 16% YoY, which is the same it fell last year. That sounds extremely optimistic to me. Your 11m figure isn't optimistic, it's a dream. 11m would assume a 7% drop - an enourmous improvement over 2012's 16% drop, and with the PS4 possibly releasing too; 11m simply wishful thinking.

Since the PS3 fell 16% last year, it'll likely fall 20-30% YoY this year, if not more. That would put it at around 8.5 - 9.5m. So 9.5m is actually a optimistic prediction because it assumes a 20% drop which is barely higher than it's 16% drop last year.

Sony will always support their consoles even after they introduce their next generation ones. They have said countless times about how the PS3 will have a 10 year life cycle.

PS3 sales will be at freefall as soon as Sony unveils their next home system. They'll be lucky to sell over 7 million in 2013.

Oh lord, another "PS3 is going to pass Wii" thread?

It's not going to happen guys. I'll repeat that so it can sink it. It is NOT going to happen... The sooner you can make peace with it, the better. Granted, it will get close, but you have to realize that even the almighty PS3 numbers will decline. It is already starting. And Wii still manages to sell a small amount, which will allow it to trickle to 105 million or so. There is simply no way PS3 reaches that number. 95 million units MAX.

We are soon getting to the dog days of sales where each console will only sell around 50-100 thousand per week, then these predictions are going to look pretty silly.

Its going to drop over 4 million units despite last year having no decent exlcuisves and this year is literally over flowing wiht such titles? Add in a price drop I'd be surprised if it didn't push 10 Million. Too many people are assuming the rest of next gen console will be released this year or early next, the ps3/360 will get 2 more solid hoilday periods.

I'm expecting 95m though, which would be:

10 this year
6.5 next year
3.5 next
2 next
1 next

So you agree? 100m is impossbile for the PS3.

Keep in mind that consoles are usually discontinued when they only sell 1-3m units a year.

Kind of, except I don't think it's impossible for PS3 to do it. PS2 has sold 40-50m since PS3 was released. Now look at this graph I stole from Michael-5's thread:

Look at the blue PS3 line. If PS3 can keep this up and follow a similar pattern to PS2 it can sell 30m+ easily from here. However, I expect it to drop a bit more harshly so 20-25m will be the likely outcome

PS2 has had a real long life.
