Forums - Sales - PS3 to be the second most popular home console EVER?

wont pass Wii.

The rate at which it sells now brings in a very high probability though. By projecting 13 million for 2013,  8 million for 2014(PS4 year and reduced price), 7million by 2015 end or q2 2016. Wii would have been discontinued by then, due to lack of support and thus making ps3 easily surpassing it marginally by 2016 end.

I'm sorry, PS3 didn't manage 12 million consoles sold in 2012, so you are naturally projecting 13 million for 2013?

Never say Never. Official figures for 2012 are yet to come out from SCEI. So don't jump the gun just yet by assuming it sold close to 12  mn or lesser. Now to account for the 2013's projection, time and time again it's mentioned how price cut's purpose comes into play. Even when next gen consoles are released, the current gen(especially PS brand) unlike Nintendo receive continued support from devs with an extensive library which will only have room to add further games. PS3 is on the verge of having the highest number of 1 million exclusives sold this gen and they (released and upcoming versions) will continue to have a gaming audience. Moreover 2013 is shaping up to be the year where 3 major exclusives (refer to my sig) will intend to push the systems to some extent. So a sales boost in hardware units during the months of their release along with a price-cut/bundles just before the 2013 holiday season would work wonders.

With emerging markets like Brazil, other parts of Asia, it'll continue to sell steadily for atleast 3 years before heading south. That's why selling thru 30 mn + is inevitable and Wii would be surpassed marginally before the gen is sealed completely.

What's with people and thinking PS3 will sell outrageously this year? (And the next.) It won't.
And it won't pass the Wii either.

EDIT: Okay, it could sell quite well this year but I doubt it could sell very well in 2014.

10-11m this year.
7-9m the next depending on when PS4 releases and how well it starts off.

11 Million this year? I doubt it. And next year I see 8 Million being the high, especially if PS4 releases this year.

10m is the lowest it could go if you're being pesismistic.
11m being optimistic.

I think 11m is very possible with all the great games releasing this year including games like GTA V + a possible price cut and maybe even the 12gig PS3 model being released in the US.

At this point in a life cycle, software doesn't spike hardware like it does in the earlier years.

You'll be surprised then at PS3 sales on GTA V week.
All together all these PS3 games will keep it from dropping hard. Like I said above, that combined with a price cut will keep PS3 sales high this year.

After a console falls after its peak, its subsequent falls are considerably more harsh. And YoY falls are even more severe the year its successor releases.

The PS3 fell 16% in 2012. That being said, we should expect the PS3 to fall considerably more than 16% this year. That means the PS3 should sell considerably less than 10m this year. And this is without considering the effect the PS4 release will have.

Please explain to me how 10m is pessimistic. A 10m prediction would have the PS3 fall 16% YoY, which is the same it fell last year. That sounds extremely optimistic to me. Your 11m figure isn't optimistic, it's a dream. 11m would assume a 7% drop - an enourmous improvement over 2012's 16% drop, and with the PS4 possibly releasing too; 11m simply wishful thinking.

Since the PS3 fell 16% last year, it'll likely fall 20-30% YoY this year, if not more. That would put it at around 8.5 - 9.5m. So 9.5m is actually a optimistic prediction because it assumes a 20% drop which is barely higher than it's 16% drop last year.

This isn't your typical console generation and the PS3 is still getting a huge amount of both exclusive and 3rd party support I just don't see sales falling that much especially if a price cut is planned for this year. PS3 still isn't at mass market price.

ps brand has long long sexy defined toned shapely legs. its the ultimate marathon runner, its gonna come close to another 10M in 2013,then at the end of this year and going forward,it will hit the golden sweet spots for consoles at 199,then 179 and absolutely rake.this is a monster that is starting to hulk out and kick ass and take names, its gonna grab the casuals by the throats(and maybe even the testies) and demand to be boughten,it will flirt its most impressive 1st party catalog at dirt cheap prices and tease ppl until it seduces them into a purchase.and this will continue all the way until one day it taps the wii on the shoulder with its finger, and as the wii turns around, the ps3 says,''sup'',as the wii passes out in shock as it takes sight to the monster standing over it. then the ps3 grabs its belt and yells http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VyzII09Hos

Classic!

So PS3 will be the second place loser? Also no PS3 will not become the second most popular home console ever.
PS2>PS1>Wii> and whatever else their is.

No chance.

You people seem to think that the PS3 will have the same post-gen legs as the PS2 did, which is ludicrous. The only reason the PS2's legs were so good is because it was enormously popular and it made financial sense for Sony to continue to support it after the next-gen had started. Times have changed since then. The PS3 is nowhere near the popularity of the PS2 and its post-gen legs will be significantly shorter.

No. Again, even if PS3 sold only 50% of PS2 post-PS3 sales from here on out it could outsell Wii. Actually, it is very near its popularity relative to the year we are looking at. PS3 is holding up better than PS2 did relatively.

72.4 million + 20 million = 92.4 million.  The Wii is already 6.4 million units ahead of that and still selling.   Much slower but still selling.

Wasn't PS2 at about 110m back then? So ~47m/2 = 23.5m -> PS3 = 96m . Then we add the usual 15% fluctuation and you've got a stew going

Going by several posts in here, the PS2 sold ~40 million after the PS3 launched.  50% would be ~20 million.   Even with the 15% fluctuate, that's still just 23 million.  So 72.4 million + 23 million = 95.4 million.

when all is said and done, PS3 will be the second highest selling home console of all time only surpassed by PS2.

Every time the PS3 comes close to the 360 it loses all it's progress once the holiday hits. It's been a repeating cycle for like 3 years now. No chance of the 360 or PS3 reaching Wii or PS1 numbers if the successors are hitting next year.

Impossible.

With 20% YOY decline for 2012 already underway, I still say PS3 will pull this feat and will reach very close to PS1.
