I would blame the handheld gaming market. Vita out. 3DS to follow.

IMPENDING DOOM OF VITA AND 3DS= Android/iOS

I think blaming the market for poor sales doesn't really hold up when you see the 3ds shifting 1/4million units the last 3 weeks in a row, also I love how that pic doesn't have either starting stage complete :D I can just imagine how awful that would be to play looking at the crushed snes controller, how close the dash button is to right on the virtual dpad, painful.

No it does however account for the sales. 3DS is currently enjoying the sales because of it's reasonable price and that's appealing to a large userbase especially the Japanese market . Vita which is selling at almost double it's price and not enough games puts it at a tough spot. 50 percent price-cut is only the solution. Kazuo Hirai must be re-thinking his strategy by now with a price-cut following much earlier than expected. But even then my point holds up- the handheld gaming market is slowly turning onto smartphones and tablets which is not good for both Vita and 3DS. And the way how Android/iOS  (software and hardware) evolve every year is to be noted. It's not about what you are doing literally in the Pic.I won't be surprised if a 2014 android device or an iphone completely trounces Vita and 3DS off its features and functionality.By then both 3DS and  especially PS Vita should make sure they have reached their maximum selling point.

While some here may be willing to give the Vita all the time it needs to find any degree of success. I assure you that most brick and mortar retailers will not be so forgiving. Sooner rather then later their forbearance will be exhausted, and they are going to cease carrying the product, and the associated software. Retail space is precious, and the Vita is looking to be a waste of that space.

With this thread in mind I am going to make my own prediction for the future. The PS Vita will be defunct by years end. It will start in October with game cancellations being announced. During November retailers will begin to get spooked, and will start to put the system on clearance. By December it will be a full blown panic to get rid of stock. Before early January when Sony will confirm that it had indeed suspended production late in the previous year.

There we have no need for another thread six months from now. Either I will be right, or it will manage to sell just enough to match some of the low end predictions. A big part of all this is Sony's fault for how rapidly it cut prices on the PS3. It created the impression that they could, and in fact would do that with succeeding hardware. I know it may sound harsh to some, but it might be for the best. Such a failure may prove to many gamers that price cuts aren't going to be a foregone conclusion going forward. Which may help the PS4 to be more profitable when it finally arrives.

Interesting prediction but I think what will infact save the Vita, in the short term at least, is a price cut once its finally annouconced. I think once the price of the WiiU is announced and the pre-order numbers start rolling in, Sony will try to counter this by dropping the Vita's price and making the Vita more attractive to a small number of gamers over the holiday season. Sony will then however herold this as a great success, and thereby try to sell even more Vitas.

I think however regardless of a price drop and all of Sony's efforts to make the Vita sell, it wouldn't be enough to over come the lure of the new WiiU hardware and possibly a killer app like Mario being released in the launch window during the holiday season for the WiiU.

Think you're well off with this, right now you are starting to see a few of the very basic DS launch games like the pheonix wright games coming to IoS which for the most part are static images not a whole lot going on so they are well suited to being controlled by taps on a screen, but as for the full blown handheld gaming experience, you just can't compare to an actual system with phsical buttons and the optional touch screen or in vitas case a touch screen and the rear touch pad, if you wanna see the real limitations of ios controls try and get the iphone version of street fighter 4 and then get either the 3ds's port of Super Street fighter 4 or the vitas version of Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and you will rethink just how evolved ios gaming feels.

I feel proud since I was among the very few prediction kings who prophesied that Vita would flop. Only five people predicted a smaller number than I did (7 million).

You are a god among men

Google = a god btw

Just a FYI

Wut?

I'm just joking with ya buddy, no hard feelings right Cheerio mates?

Anyways, at least I learned something new today, my iphone/ipod touch is a game console. No wonder gaming companies are making games on iOS/Android.

No, the definition oxford gave reads "a small electronic device for playing computerised video games" meaning the main purpose of the device is to play games

if it had read "a small electronic device that can play computerised video games". Then you would have a point.

Are people here really trying to spin this by not classing vita as a handheld console? Thats a desperate angle to take I must say.

Ohh I was gonna predict 3.1 Million but was too scared to :(

Next time I won't let fear of being kidnapped by predicting too low stop me!

Another day, another one of these.

On the topic about whether or not a handheld video gaming device is a console, the answer is yes, yes it is. The definition someone gave from Webster's dictionary said ": an electronic system that connects to a display (as a television set) and is used primarily to play video games" for the definition of a console. Notice that a vita/3DS both have a display (resembling a television set) built onto it.

That OP has everything. It has inaccurate predictions on most the console sales, it calls the PS Vita a flop, and says that we have to talk about it. You've studied these boards well, Man Bear Pig.

If he had studied these boards well, then the thread would be titled: "The PS Vita is a MAJOR flop - we need to talk about it".

Or "Why the PS Vita bombed!" but I think that he did a marvelous job of making this unique.

Wait... he changed the title to "The PS Vita is a MAJOR flop - we need to talk about it".   "Why the PS Vita bombed!" would have been a much better title.

Someone really needs to call in the bomb squad so they can disarm the Vita before it does any more damage to Sony.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I hope you don't plan on making a bet with that prediction.

If retailers dropped the Vita after discovering their repressed dislike of money Sony would just say "screw this" and push forth a huge marketing campaign and sell the Vitas themselves through online orders with free shipping. They could even stop all production of physical games and bundle in 32gb cards to go all digital, keep prices low on PSN, and then bad mouth all the retailers in private meetings with their wads of cash.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
