With this thread in mind I am going to make my own prediction for the future. The PS Vita will be defunct by years end. It will start in October with game cancellations being announced. During November retailers will begin to get spooked, and will start to put the system on clearance. By December it will be a full blown panic to get rid of stock. Before early January when Sony will confirm that it had indeed suspended production late in the previous year.

There we have no need for another thread six months from now. Either I will be right, or it will manage to sell just enough to match some of the low end predictions. A big part of all this is Sony's fault for how rapidly it cut prices on the PS3. It created the impression that they could, and in fact would do that with succeeding hardware. I know it may sound harsh to some, but it might be for the best. Such a failure may prove to many gamers that price cuts aren't going to be a foregone conclusion going forward. Which may help the PS4 to be more profitable when it finally arrives.

Interesting prediction but I think what will infact save the Vita, in the short term at least, is a price cut once its finally annouconced. I think once the price of the WiiU is announced and the pre-order numbers start rolling in, Sony will try to counter this by dropping the Vita's price and making the Vita more attractive to a small number of gamers over the holiday season. Sony will then however herold this as a great success, and thereby try to sell even more Vitas.

I think however regardless of a price drop and all of Sony's efforts to make the Vita sell, it wouldn't be enough to over come the lure of the new WiiU hardware and possibly a killer app like Mario being released in the launch window during the holiday season for the WiiU.
