Forums - Gaming Discussion - Graphics: Gamecube vs. Xbox vs. PS2 vs. Dreamcast

I honestly can't believe that after 7 years of a generation being over people can still argue about the graphics.

developers & anandtech claim XBOX is the superior console last gen

Let me say this once again today: The Xbox is still the most powerful game machine on the planet. Not only is this the greatest compliment that a software engineer can give to a piece of hardware, it is also a reflection of our appreciation of the Xbox for allowing us to run DOA3, DOAX, and now Ninja Gaiden with the quality that we, Team Ninja, hoped for.

My first thoughts were, what can we do with this game on Xbox that the other consoles couldn`t? So we focused on an increased number of polygons, multitexturing, and designs to exploit the hardware.

The number of textures, visual effects and polygons we throw onto the screen would bring any other console to its knees. We really made the most of what the Xbox offers a game developer.

The hard drive for streaming, pixel shaders for some effects, and the raw power. It would not fit on a PlayStation and would change beyond recognition to fit the GameCube. It's not that we've been inefficient either; we're just asking a lot of the hardware, and the Xbox is the only one that can deliver.

Both the GameCube and Xbox are clearly superior to the PS2 in terms of the quality of the graphics seen in games available today. The transition from PS2 to GameCube and/or Xbox is a fairly large leap, but going between GameCube and Xbox is a bit less dramatic.

I hope thiis shuts up the unbelievable BS that Libro is coming out with.

Its a known fact among every developer and media that Xbox is the most powerful connsole for the 6th gen.

It's not as simple as that.

The Xbox was easier to program for, so it's full power was easy to harness, which is why it's seen as "the most powerful." The Gamecube was much trickier, and only Factor 5 ever fully unlocked it. The Xbox had more brute force, but lower internal banwidth, a less efficient CPU, and slower RAM hampered its overall performance, while the Gamecube was more efficient but had less RAM and lacked a hard drive for streaming.

You couldn't do, say, Chronicles of Riddick on Gamecube, but you couldn't do Roue Squadron 3 on Xbox either.

Actually you could, but something will have to give either geometry, shading, lighting, polygons, physics or A.I etc'.

It's like running Doom 3 on a 3dfx Voodoo 2 a graphics card released what, 8ish years before the game? You just have to tone down everything or introduce more efficient tricks.

You could for example, grab oblivion, reduce the grass and tree density, introduce lower resolution textures, lower polygon models, disable shadows and tone down the shader effects and it can run on the origional Xbox just fine which some PC users have managed to do on PC's very similar to that of the xbox minus the ram amount. (Remember, Developers could achieve better optimisation.)

I meant in its current form. By downgrading you could get anything on Xbox running on the Gamecube as well. Hell, they got the COD games built for PS3/360 running on Wii by downgrading.

A load of developer quotes isnt reliable enough, but two cherry picked images is? keep up the denial folks.

not only that, the spec-sheet is not reliable either.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

That's the most accurate assessment of the situation.

@Khuutra

I see he ignored your post as well as mine. That speaks volumes.

Man, there are things that the Sega Genesis could do that the Super Nes just could not do. There are things that can be done on the 360 that couldn't be done on the PS3. That doesn't make the weaker system more powerful, does it? That just means that they have different strengths.

When you start trimming down the game then your entire argument falls flat. Riddick will run on the GC if you start giving up features like that.

Anything will run on anything if you give up enough.
