| RolStoppable said:The problem is that the game isn't good. It focuses on feeding you a story, so the gameplay takes a backseat. Your party members are always chosen for you, unless you decide to go to the (basically worthless) coliseum or revisit an already completed area (also worthless). You can only play as Zael and all characters have at most three skills that can be used during battles. Towards the end of any given area is a red circle where you can summon enemies in case you feel underleveled. These enemies are notably weaker than the ones you just fought beforehand, but give you more EXP. This was done to get actual gameplay out of the way and focus on the storytelling. It's not really a game you play, it's a game that plays you. I do not recommend it. |
I agree mostly. The battle-gameplay wasn't bad actually. It was only a pain, if you played a spellcaster as main character (you play not always zael, only 90%, all other characters get a short play). The system gives you enough option to make some strategy, but not enough to make it to complicated for real-time-battles.
you're right, it's a game that plays you. That is true for some iconic JRPGs, as far as I played them. The story in these games is so important, that it controls every other aspect of the game. Bad thing is, no game so far can match movies or books. In the case of the Last Story the storyline is ... extremely cheesy and many 'surprising' changes are very much predictable. Oh, this girl is the princess, oh X turns out to be a bad guy, oh these two are in love and these other two too. Surprise, surprise.
The battles are cool, but the problem is as you describe: you have no random battles. Grinding is built in with the summoning circles. Going back to already beaten areas has no fun. I wished Last Story would have grinding and random battles, so you can have more fun out of battles.
Better choices are Etrian Odyssey and Pandoras Tower (although the Towers are not really a RPG, you make levels but don't have choice for character-development, but it works great as action-adventure too).
